It was predicted that today in the first of the stages with sand would be tough, and so it has turned out. At the end of the stage, Cyril Despres is now in the overall lead with 10 minutes over Casteau. Marc Coma and David Fretigne both had tough days - esp Fretigne.

Philip Noone was 118th thru the 74km marker post, and in 99th at 117km so hopefully all is well with him......

Following it on Eurosport on-line......... sadly a spectator, a 28 year old girl was killed. Makes for a bad start to an otherwise fantastic event

Its irrelevant to the next of kin, but the group she was with were located outside the marked safe-spectating zones ........... they can never hope to be able to fully police the entire route - even with 1800 marshals per stage - so certain spectating areas are marked and cordoned for use.............they were in different area.

I'm sure that you meant that it was relevant to the next of kin. The point I was making was that it was sad that a life had been lost, especially a spectators life.

I was trying to imply that at this point, the semanics of the location were of little or no significance to the unfortunate spectators next-of-kin. In that sense, an irrelevance.

On a lighter note, Philip Noone has finished todays stage in 84th position and is now 113th overall. Go Team Dakar Ireland.
