PRESS RELEASE – Dakar Rally Jan 08
01 Dec 2007

For Immediate Release

INNOVATIVE BIKE TRANSPORT SERVICE TAKES BIKES TO AFRICA FOR THE DAKAR RALLY – Charley and Ewan look what you’ve started!

The Dakar rally is a dream for many of us bikers and adventure types. Even spectating at this historic event is often seen as out of reach by many in the UK. The rally starts in Lisbon and heads south into Spain and then Morocco where the ‘real’ action begins. It would take a few days to ride there and of course a few days to ride back, with all the added cost of fuel, oil, tyres, hotels, wear n tear and depreciation etc. Not to mention the freezing weather!

However, Biketruck is offering a Dakar Spectator Package which will truck your bike out to the rally allowing you to fly in to southern Spain via a cheapie airline such as easyJet. You pick up your bike near the airport and ride off to the Algeciras ferry – then 35 minutes later you find yourself in Africa, ready for a week’s adventure with the Dakar. Biketruck provide each rider with a simple route map, hotel recommendations and advice to help you on your way. The trip lasts one full week – so you only have to take a week off work! And flights to Malaga can be as little as £12.99 online!

Billy Ward, the owner of Biketruck spent five weeks following the Dakar back in January. He commented that the atmosphere and the excitement of both the rally and the simple fact that you’re in Africa was just “…an amazing lifetime experience”. Meeting some of the star riders and seeing the action in the desert was another highlight for Billy… “…the massive race trucks flying past you in plumes of desert dust, the smell of hot engines – and then the real heroes of the Dakar – the bikers! Its just awesome

It was whilst watching Charley Boorman and Ewan McGregor on the “Long Way Round” that Billy decided to create Biketruck.com. An innovative specialist bike transport business aimed at getting large numbers of bikers to interesting adventure spots around the world – at an affordable biker price. The bikes are transported a week before the “fly in date” and returned to the UK roughly a week after the “fly out date”. It’s a simple concept, but as Billy points out, moving bikes is a specialist job. The bikes are secured in the trucks in stillages or special pallets. These bikes are the owners pride and joy – and so Biketruck employs bikers on the team – who understand their ‘emotions’ – Billy says with a smile!

Billy has built up some great business relationships particularly in North Africa and can also offer a fully ‘looked after’ option to the Dakar trip riders as opposed to just transport and route maps. Bikers can be met in Tangier by a professional guide who will escort them and support them through the week as well as sort out all of the hotels, most meals and best rally viewing sights – all for a fully inclusive price.

Biketruck have moved bikes for lots of biker celebrities as individuals but also in bulk, having recently moved the whole BMW off road school over to Ireland for a special event run by Simon Pavey – head honcho and top Dakar rider. Biketruck is not just a general haulier – its whole reason for being is just to work with and in, the biking industry. Moving ‘stuff’ is not our business says the MD – moving bikes and bike related stuff is!

Showing how bike focussed this business is, they recently produced and directed a theatrical show with Charley Boorman and Patsy Quick as the guest stars, entitled “An evening of Adventure Motorcycling”. This was a fantastic success and drew lots of notable characters from the biking world including The Hairy Bikers, The Scottish and the Irish Dakar Rally teams, numerous English Dakar riders such as Mick Extance and Duncan Tweedy and several famous authors including Chris Scott “The Motorcycle Adventure Handbook” – the list is too long to continue here!

In the wake of the Long Way Down series, Billy anticipates a great deal of interest in this trip – and others planned into 2008.

The Dakar truck will be leaving the UK on the 1st January to meet up with the riders who would fly out to Malaga on Saturday 5th. Return fly back date is Sunday 13th Jan. To find out more about the trip and more about Biketruck, go to www.biketruck.com or www.dakarexpress.com.

Dakar Truck - a week in Morocco - nice taster...

Hi all - thanks for the Plug Ozzy (u on commission?):augie,
just a quickie about the truck going to Southern Spain on 1st January taking bikes to the Dakar for spectators (inc me!). Truck leaves UK on the 1st, riders fly into Malaga on the 5th (easyJet) Ride to Algerciras and over to Morocco - ride on route plan (or please self), take in Fez, Er Richidia (Bivouac), Merzouga, Erg Chebbie, Risani, Erfoud etc. then over to Ouazarzate (Bivouac) before heading north for a stop off in Marrakesh and home fly back home from Malaga - bikes go back on truck. This is not an organised 'tour' - just transport and a map!

Have good Morocco company who can arrange hotels and all arrangements and support vehicle - as an option - but need ten for them to be up for it.

Have a look at www.biketruck.com or mail me at [email protected]
I was there in January following the Dakar - and thought what a good idea!
Since then, been back in May and then again in June - cant keep away.

Dont worry about coming on ya own - there's always lots of people to follow!!! I'm just heading south myself - sleeping wherever and some camping!! Tho its cold at nite!!

See some interesting pics here:

anyone on the trip...

just wondering if anyone is on this trip or is planning on going?

Hi so far we have about 10 on the trip - tho some are one way and some return. We may also be moving about 10 Dakar Rally competitors bikes to Lisbon.

You can either come and just join in, riding with whoever eg. me and a guy from Scotland and another from Durham are just joining up. Or you can just go awal and do your own thing with a little route plan.

I planned this so it would just be a week off work - but some are just going one way, and then making their own way home when they are ready. If you do this I can give a better price - but a little tip is, get heated gloves and a heated jacket cos its fricken freezing heading up Norther Spain and up France and England!!! :)
Cheers

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. :augie
I hope all those who went have a great time anyway. At least they'll get a bit of sun and sand riding even without a race to watch.
