Dam Bustin Makes Us Feel Good

Thanks Glenn, fallen behind a bit, I’ll catch this up.

Bit of a Day 2, bike dramas, cop dramas, heat dramas.

I promise to update tomorrow, leaving at 0630 as it’s super scorchio at moment.

Can't leave us hanging like that !!!

So cliffhanger fans…..

Day 3

Brugge to Soest near Möhnesee

So we had a leisurely start and walk round Brugge again, open gates and get ready for a long hot day burning through the boring miles.

At a Dual Carriageway lay by I stop for a team water break….

On pulling away, Mr Cardo tells me “oh fuck hang on mate”…..

Long story short.

Clutch cable snapped at clutch end.

2 of us are 200m up road, 4 left on scene.

Plan A.

Myself and David will get off next junction to safety and start looking for bike dealers etc.

Rod Pete Kev and Jerry will work the job.

Cops pull up and put blues on for safety, give the guys 20 mins to get it sorted or it’s tie truck time.

Unbelievably I find a Triumph main dealer 14 miles away and it’s 4 miles off our intended route.

Cable fixed on scene so we RV and head to dealership.

No cables in stock but they agree to take one off a shop bike, great gesture.

As the fix is good it gets stored and ready.

This takes time but decision made to not rush and accept being late.

Good points, it’s not Sunday and our hotel is 24 hr check in.

Arrive in Soest around 2130, all hot , all knackered, refuel ready for tomorrow.

A challenging day, but despite it being hotter than Anne Widdecombe running the London Marathon, 6 people got 6 home safe.

Bed time, collapse……..

Day 4

So up and straight into the bike issues……

GPS bodged and working on my Guzzi.

Clutch cable prepped for action pending another burp….

Then into the beautiful Soest town square for breakfast.

Such a beautiful town.

2 x Dam breached today.

Mohne and Sorpe.

Beautiful cafe lunch on edge of Sorpsee follows by ice cream in Winterberg, all via sensational roads.

Back for Tea, Medals and Currywurst.

Tomorrow is Dam 3 and the Harz …….

Day 5

Soest to Braunlage Harz Mountains

The only way we can beat the heat is time, so we’re up and rolling by 0630.

Added bonus, Jerry will still be asleep by the time we get to the Eder Dam, less flack, and In reality zero traffic.

Sure enough we arrive and have it to ourselves bar some bloke cleaning up.

Onwards back to the mess for tea and medals, in reality a nice cafe near Kassel for coffee and pastry.

A little bit on Autobahn to have a rest, prior to the Hockenheim ring that is the Harz Mountains.

In at Bad Grund and then it’s a fest of stand grinding, boot scraping joy.

Reach a decision point relate and everyone wants more so it’s a loop of Goslar then south again towards Torfhaus via Hahenklee.

It is epic.

Torfhaus is awash with bikes, drink and tat ship visit, into Braunlage for fuel then a village 4 miles away for bed.

Schnitzel and beer, bit of planning, head down for a 0700 go tomorrow.

Fucking Epic.

And a bit of trivia……

After bouncing across the reservoir, the bomb would strike the dam wall, lose its forward momentum, and sink.

A hydrostatic fuse triggered the explosive charge at a precise, calculated depth (around 30 feet), allowing the water to direct the explosive shockwave into the dam.

Here’s another bit of trivia

The 617 squadron practiced bombing runs on the Derwent / Ladybower reservoir in Derbyshire as the dam looks a lot like the German ones

Mate of mine who flies took us up for a look…..

Enjoying the trip report by the way (y)
More trivia.
We once cancelled our IFR flight plan in a 737 and flew over the Mohne at 3000 feet on the way in to Düsseldorf from Berlin.

3000, we get nosebleeds above 150 AGL
