Dam Bustin Makes Us Feel Good

Day 9
Salzburg to Dornbirn Austria.
Essentially a repositioning day west to east, but one of the best road days of the trip for my money.
Spend the day jogging between Austria and Germany.
Some sections are again like the Hockenheim Ring.
Bad Tölz arrives and we elect for a functional stop rather than wandering round town sweating like paedos in a playground, it’s still v hot.
It include a pass at Bayrischzell which is just like 50 craner curves laid out.
Then one of my favourite roads in world.
Ettal to the Plansee, Oulton Park for 15 miles.
The Plansee is breathtaking so we stop for ice cream.
I decide to take a mini dip and rinse off, soak my neck scarf, then move onto the Joch Pass.
This is a ludicrous series of bends leading to Sonthofen.
In McShits for cold drinks and then the final push towards Dornbirn.
Into Holiday Inn for tea and medals.
No big ticket items today, but my favourite day on the bike.
Despite some fairly ferocious heat everyone is getting it done safely

Rest Day
Most do admin and relaxing out if the heat.
Completist that I am I drag Rod along for a few hundred miles of great roads.
Pete also heads out solo for a bimble and some nice shots.

Day 11
Dornbirn to Aarburg Switzerland via Furka and Grimsel.
Big day this.
It’s still bloody hot, first stop proper is the Victoinox factory Eibach.
A welcome bit of AC and a lovely shop.
Immidiate Action on stopping is AC and drinks.
It’s tough going but we’re getting it done safely.

So as we’re hoofing along I look down and see hundreds of trucks parked on the motorway that we are paralleling.
My instant thoughts are “some teat has crashed and the Gotthard Tunnel is closed, all those trucks are now going to join this road.
At 37 deg this does not bode well.
Engage “London” mode and breeze past as many as possible until at Andermatt for fuel and we can cut off to passes whilst motorway traffic bumbles south.
Dodged a bullet there, but still hurt a bit.

So now it’s payback time …..
But still great roads.
We arrive in Aarburg in the dark: knackered, hot, sweating like Jimmy Savile at an NHS audit, but safe and with a bed awaiting.
Me personally, I like the odd night finish.
Adds a bit of a denture to the , err, adventure.
Tomorrow is Black Forrest South to north, avoiding most of the 500.
