Hi All

Just removed the swingarm from my 2003 1150GS.

I've succeeded in damaging the screw thread on the gearbox housing whilst removing the front left stud (pivot) bolt. Followed the procedure in the Haynes manual (i.e. used heat to soften the Loctite) but obviously made a hash of it.

I'm in need of some advice regarding next steps.

Thanks.

if you cant clean it up with a thread file, u may be fecked, unless someone knows better?
use more heat next time

Seems like he's writing about the female thread in the gearbox, suggest you source a tap to chase out this thread.

it may be easier platting snot than finding a tap for that

Helicoil wil possibly help you our suggest you page our Mr S. if he's not in Iceland retrieving his fortune!. (or have a look in Bejams!).

depends how feked ye thread is , hold pivot bolt with yer allen key , put some cutting , grinding paste on the pivot bolt n very carefully turn it in...
might posible clean any residule locktight that could be fouling up the thead.. (or try more heat to burn it out)
if its the final drive right hand pivot bolt that needs to be tourqued up to 150 nm the threads can be fouled up with locktight , mine looked stripped , but after cleaning em up it was fine...

left hand is only 7 nm with the lock nut tightend up 105 nm , too tight ye will crack yer gearbox bell housing:blast

only thing i can think off at the mo:augie

Good luck, by the way my manual says 7Nm for both of the "floating" preloads (swing am and bevel box pivot) and 160Nm for the Locknuts?

Story so far..

Have rung a number of dealers and it appears most have stripped this thread at some point or another. Copious amounts of heat doesn't necessarily soften Loctite. Solid Loctite is like concrete and will easily strip the thread when the bolt is removed. The offending bolt seems to have been soaked in the stuff.

My neighbour is in the trade and is going to tap out the thread. However, this is a BMW 'special' thread so he's borrowing a tool from the local BMW dealer overnight.

make sure the correct locktite is used on assembly or it may happen again

cleaning threads

Acetone will help remove the Loctite i.e nail varnish remover - but check the label before you buy to ensure it does contain acetone.

Don't overdo the application of Loctite on reassembly - one line along the threads should be enough. Put a dab of paint on the pivot pin so you can monitor its position afterwards
