Apparently we are in for six months of delays at the crossing whilst they dismantle the toll booths and install the ANPR kit to start in October this year.
The joys of motoring, ho hum.
One question how are they going to bill the foreign registered vehicles?

It'll work like the London Congestion Charge. The Highways Agency reckon they will be chasing £6m of unpaid each year.

The French seem to find toll booths work just fine?

Why do we insist on not employing people?

:rob

The new Dartford system will be run by SANEF - the very same company that operate the Liber-T system on French peages!

Because people in booths (and the booths for them to sit in) create fecking great queues. The Daft Ford crossing payment collection system is a dinosaur, unable to cope.

Smart tags and Oystercard (an invention of genius).... It's the future.

I use a dart tag, but still have to queue behind hundreds of plebs with £20 notes or no money at all :blast

I absolutely resent having to pay to use a road that I already pay road tax for!!!

It's a fucking downright liberty, absolutely outrageous to stop traffic on the country's busiest motorway to take some money off them........

Far be it for me to halt your spleen-vent, but it's not actually a motorway.......

Carry on.

So what of the original question re: Johnny Foreigner?

Is it not part of the M25?

The Dartford Crossing is the A282 - non-motorway status so that learner drivers and others that can't use a motorway can actually get across the Thames.

Even though you're not allowed to take a bicycle across the bridge or in the tunnel, if you pitch up at the booth, the authorities will 'arrange your crossing' free of charge.

As with the Congestion Charge within London, foreign registered vehicles will escape billing. This is no different to British motorists avoiding speeding tickets when flashed by speed cameras overseas. Likewise parking tickets.

Not 100%. I know for sure that (most) Italian cars who don't pay the CC get fined, in Italy, from Transport for London through a debt collecting agency.
A person I know always assumed to get through for free only to, rightly so, fork out several hundred euros when back home.

People could just get foreign plates then just get away with it changing them somewhere quiet few miles up the road :blast
