Dartmoor wild camping

Is it a case of a few spoiling it for many by leaving a mess behind them or a few spoiling it for many because they didn’t want their pheasant shooting and deer stalking put at risk?

Whatever the cause it’s a shame because the areas where you could wild camp have now been removed and there’s little or no chance of getting them back.

i witnessed areas spoilt by rubbish left behind on my last Scotland trip.
some people are just irresponsible nobs who spoil it for us decent types.

The court case was instigated by one land owner who doesn’t want anyone at all on his land unless they are paying for his corporate events, it doesn’t affect all of Dartmoor and there has been an announcement today about gaining access to other areas.

We have similar issues re poor behaviour, rubbish etc in certain locations (mainly Loch Lomond and the Trossachs) but no one is suggesting banning wild camping even in those areas. They're simply subject to additional restrictions. A similar approach would surely work on Dartmoor but then again, as pointed out, it's a single landowner who wants to put the clock back.

Hmm...thats exactly what they have done?
One of the 'additional restrictions' is that you can't wild camp...ie it's banned...in certain areas at certain times of the year in the Trossachs National Park...ie when those who would wild camp prefer to do so. The National Park have indeed 'put the clock back' if you prefer to put it like that.
That leaves landowners elsewhere with the task of having to clean up after what have become known as 'dirty campers'. It is a growing problem in many parts of rural Scotland, not now restricted to Loch Lomond; the Sma Glen, Callater, Glen Etive, Clunie, Butterstone and many others, who do not have the luxury of being able to impose and enforce bye laws. You won't have seen the immense amount of crap left by dirty campers. Ultimately others will seek to have changes in the access law to prevent wild/dirty campers, exactly as this landowner has done in Dartmoor where the laws are different.
No 'clock alterations', merely a recognition that a growing section of society cannot voluntarily behave responsibly and never will. Having said that, the prospect of our current bunch of chancers and idiots infesting Holyrood changing access laws is pretty remote! Sad.

The point I was making was re the whole of Scotland. The restrictions placed in the Trossachs national park are an exception to the general right to roam and to wild camp on unenclosed land. The landowner down South is operating in a very different legal framework but is trying to reassert their absolute rights in an area where a National Park has (in his view) compromised those rights.

Hence, trying to put the clock back.

No one should approve of numpties leaving litter and shite. The answer is education and prosecution. But using the poor behaviour of a minority to exclude the majority is not the way forward.

Authorities can't be bothered with chasing people or enforcing laws so they just ban everything thinking it solves problems.

The UK legal system is truly failing where the police rarely attend burglaries (I experienced this myself) but will send numerous officers to arrest someone for posting on Facebook (over 3000 people were arrested for what they posted on Facebook).
