I intend taking a laptop along with my Quest on a forthcoming trip to log various POIs (gas stations, restaurants etc) on an ad hoc basis. The Quest needs about ten button/rocker selections each time and is therefore unsuitable for this purpose when on the move

I do have an elderly Garmin 11+ that requires only two key presses but the data cable has a "honda" plug (used with Psion products). Can anyone suggest a way of connecting this GPS to a laptop with no serial port?

If the above can be done I guess the next step is suitable software. Will Mapsource work, perhaps using Garmin/Garmin protocol or is there other suitable software?

To help understand your problem can you explain what it is your doing that needs all the button selections on the Quest? :)

Not sure if you can get Mapsource to connect to your Quest to show current position (think that's what you're trying to do). However, using Franson GPS Gate you can connect the Quest to the USB port of your laptop and show the position in MS AutoRoute.

OK - when I ride past a petrol station or some other significant point I want to quickly record it's coordinates (plus time and date) On the Garmin GPS11+ it's just two presses to log an event as 001 and the next one as 002 etc

With the Quest I have to go "find - scroll to Where Am I? - OK - save OK - OK. I am happy to edit the waypoint name at a later date when I download these POIs to the laptop and hopefully into Mapsource

To save a waypoint on the go, press and hold the "OK" button.

A screen appears asking if you want to save the current location, to save press "OK"

A screen appears telling you the details of this new waypoint, it automatically number it, 001,002 etc. Press "OK" and your back to your map/route.

So three press of the "OK" button saves your waypoint :thumb2

Thanks for that - solves the dilemma

... must RTFM ....
