Picked up my 1200gs today travelled 250 miles to look at one, then came home & found one in the local rag 2 miles away, 2005, 2000 miles dry use with luggage, previously owned by man with cleaning fetish :D it was cleaner than a new one untill i rode it home taking a 80 mile detour just to be sure it ran ok, cannot wait to get it back out tommorrow, any help with the question quoted above would be appreciated dont really want to spend money on the bmw alarm when i already have one that may fit.
Thanks leman

I also had a SP2 b4 the GS12 and never regretted it for a minute!!!!!!! any way before i ordered my GS i enquired about fitting a datatool as the BMW alarm is not thatcham approved and was told by two dealers that the GS has no where to fit a datatool alarm on the bike :spitfire

FWIW, was told the same by my dealer too.... causes CANBUS problems apparently.

My April 05 1200GS has had a Datatool System 3 alarm on it since the day I bought the bike. It was fitted by SPC (near Alton Hampshire) with guidance from Datatool (at the time based in Alton). Did have some early problems with needing to hold the transmitter very close to the bike to disarm but they were not related to the canbus concerns. As to where it is actually installed... a bit of a mystery as no sign of it if I remove the seats or side panels. I believe they installed it under the petrol tank.

Anyway just to say it can be done and sorry to not be able to explain in any further detail.

With regard to the Thatcham approval... for a bike to get a insurance discount for having a Thatcham approved alarm I understood it also had to be installed by an approved installer. That is why Datatool will not give advice on fitting the alarm to the general public. I can see why some wouldn't agree with the policy but it is the same with Nacoss approved alarms for your house.

Cheers

Paul
