I am toying with the idea of fitting a set of day time running LED lights to my 09 GSA, I would like them to be on every time I switch on the bikes ignition. I guess you need a switched live any ideas how to locate one and lastly what implication by doing this has it for the canbus system

cheers

I recently installed some CREE lights from BikeVis and once I had sourced a lightbar the instalation was a breeze.

They wire directly to the battery and turn on and off 20 seconds after the engine (the control box sensors the change in draw on the battery). Dont believe there is any issue with the canbus as they do not touch the electrics of the bike.

I ran the wires along the right hand side of the bike behind the panels and the box is sitting behind the right small side panel. Whole install took 20 mins.

They are good lights, very bright but do not dazzel other road users at night. Whole set up cost me less than £100.

have you a charger you fit to the bike and does it put the lights on

If you wired them drekkly to the battery, how do they go off after 20 seconds :nenau

I presume you actually mean that you wired them to the canbus flying lead, which IS controlled by the system and DOES go off.

We do superbright running lights like these:

5W , £110 a pair delivered, need no relays 'cos the current draw is stupidly low

Or these, twin 3w at £85 a pair, delivered.

They have 2 clips that go directly onto the battery terminals. They also have a couple of wires which you can splice onto the side light which will act as the on/off but I didn't bother with this as I'm fine with a 20 sec delay (helps me see while I lock up the bike). I believe the control box (about 7cm x 4cm x 1cm) can sense when the bike turns on and off due to the draw on the battery but I dont know how it works, only that it does work.

There is a note on the instructions that say they may be interfered with by a charger but i've not needed to put the bike on charge since I installed them lights so I'm not sure.

I plan to fit a simple switch - maybe under the beak on the lightbar for simplicity - before winter kicks in and I need to use the charger. Other option is to pull out the fuse when I put the bike on charge but as the fuse is under the seat this is not a good option.

Does anyone know if it will pass an MOT with the lights fitted (and no switch)? I plan to take the fuse out when it goes for an MOT but not sure if this is necessary.

Cree running lights

I fitted a pair of these to my 2012 1200gs, these included a control box which after 20 seconds was supposed to turn them off, after returning home late a couple of times and seeing my bike cover illuminated , I ended up fitting a waterproof switch on the handlebars which removed any fears about them switching themselves on, I think the problem was I had my bike linked up to an optimate charger which confused the control box.
Fantastically bright lights and well worth fitting, traffic parts with ease when they're on:augie

i used the sat nav supply lead by the headstock, man enough for a couple of CREE lights or similar, cheap and simple, no relay and no wiring to batt etc

mines an 06 bike and the power comes on and off with the ignition, but given some comments recently about Canbus keeping the sat nav supply live when bike is off might be best to check with a meter first

Wire a Fuzeblock (from Nippy), trigger it from the side light, then add a pair of Fanum's best LEDs. No problems with Canbus on my 1200.

Sorry, but that looks absolutely gopping. :eek

Plus, you do realise you can decorate your moving xmas tree as much as you like and it won't make a blind but of difference, don't you? :comfort

Is it possble to fit a relay into the canbus ignition circuit?

If you take the "trigger" from the side/tail light, then yes.

I'm lost now triggers !

The "trigger" is what you use to tell the relay to turn ON.

A relay (usually) has 4 wires.
  • 1 to Earth
  • 1 to the Battery positive
  • 1 to the item you want to power (ie spotlights)
  • 1 to (usually) an ignition live ie sidelight. This is the "trigger"

If wiring spotlights so they come on with the MAIN beam, then you would take the trigger from the main beam circuit.
If you want spotlights on all the time, you would take the trigger from an ignition live, or tail light or even the low beam light.

I won't even start on about "change over" relays with 5 poles instead of 4. But they are useful too.....

Hope that helps.

Those were fitted for demo, so not tidies up and finished .

I disagree about not making a difference- Particularly with LEDs which have that slight twinkling effect as they are actually flashing too fast to be seen (but the brain interprets it as a slight twinkle)

On my K bike in particular, people DEFINITELY see me earlier as I come up behind them....you can see it clearly by the reaction and car body language.

I fully accept that some people won't notice though, and regardless of whether I have lights fitted or not, I always ride as if I'm invisible AND they are all out to get me :thumb2
