Hi, All.

I've been having problems trying to run my 12GB hard drive in my Compaq laptop of 7.5 years of age. The reason being: I ran the AVG anti virus whilst on battery power, instead of plugging the damn thing in. The battery ran out, and certain files were evidently not returned to their proper place, hence, I cannot get the computer to start up properly, and access the totality of this hard drive (now converted to an external drive, having had to re-install the orignial 4GB drive in order to work) is now impossible.

Brought the thing into a local shop to verify that the information hadn't been lost. Lucky for me, as I still don't know how to do a sauvegarde. They made a copy of my hard drive, but on to 2 DVD's, instead of cds. Of course I don't have a dvd reader, that would make things too easy.

I've tried running the only backup cd that my brother had made for me (A Windows 2000 upgrade cd), but it seems that's all I've got to work with.
The repair "r" mode doesn't give any results, along with the recovery console "C" mode. Same results.

A message simply states that it isn't able to find a version of Windows 2000 on the computer. And another suggests trying to restart the process of repair. Still no luck.

Any suggestions so as to resolve this predicament? I need to access the information contained in Microsoft Outlook in the worst way.

Just for info, there's nothing pirated as per the cd's. Everything was paid for.

Thanks in advance,

Alts

Have you tried just reinstalling the Windows system as opposed to repairing it, if you haven't give it a try and if it is successful you should find that most of your documents etc will still be there.
When you reinstall chose the 'C' drive and you will be told there is already a system installed do you want to continue Etc Etc, continue and as long as you are reinstalling the identical copy of windows - Win 2000 to Win 2000 you shouldn't have a problem.

And then flog it and get a new one:D

I would not be so quick to blame the AV - the scan engine will return a checksum for each file as it traverses the file system, this is then compared to a database, it will not move files during scanning, the only exception is if they are infected, and if this is the case (dependant on the scan strategy) they would not be returned to the original location or if it was some form of proxy based mail client scanning and again this should not screw the OS

Maybe the start of a hardware issue?

I haven't even been able to make it as far as drive C. Apart from the Compac logo and a white on black screen message (haven't noted it) that's it.

As ignorant as I am about the way the thing functions, I'm just scared stiif about not being able to recovers 7.5 years of research and work, (and the pictures of the cat, of course).

And it seems as though the copy of the upgrade that my distant brother made for me, isn't recognised.

No blame as far the AVG goes, just thought that because the battery cut out, things remained in Limbo.

Will try putzing around again tonight.

Keep those neurons working, though.

Ah Compaq! - I have an old Compaq laptop that went tits up - from memory it has a 10 meg partition that has a lot to do with bootup (it was a while ago) Anyway corruption of the partition caused a total apparent loss of OS, I did get the information back, but it involved a fivers worth of 2.5" to 3.5" drive adapter (A ribbon cable basically) I stuck the drive into a normal PC as a slave and just copied my data over.

Under the circumstances I think Ovenpaas suggestion is the best way to go.

Yes, that's more or less the conclusion that I've come too, as well. But! Seeing as there seem to be certain files that cannot be copied onto cd and read i.e. .pst (for Microsoft Outlook) and as most, if not all, of the lads here don't even use this program, their knowledge of Importing and Exporting or Managing identities seems to be about the equivalent of mine = not a lot.

'nother question: is it possible to purchase a Windows Upgrade on the web? I'm wondering if this wasn't the case when my brother was talking care of my computer/ my origibnal OS was 98 SE, he installed the upgrade (I have a copy he made on cd for me with the serial numbers written upon it). Unfortunately, I ran the reinstall, last night, and it said that no version of Windows 2000 was recognized. This is my version of being Lost in Cyber Space.

Any particular name for the cable, in question?

Talk to you soon........ and thanks.

Regarding the .pst files, I'm not sure if this would work, but if you connect the your drive to another machine with the corresponding version of Outlook already installed on it and did the relevant searches, that might find the files for you, ie search for .pst files on your drive then drag them into Outlook on the PC.

Your second part regarding upgrades, a 7year old L/top would just about run with XP but you would most likely have to bump up the RAM as well.

I don't know who your broadband supplier is but this might help you a bit more, I would have bit their hands off myself but I've 6 months of a contract to run with my existing ISP.
The Advent Laptop for £200 is a steal.
