Nick V: They should not fail, it needs to be addressed at source by BMW.
W, I'm with you 100% on that. It's just that I fear it was done too late, or inadequately, or both.
I admit, I AM an idealist. But I try to balance that with healthy scepticism. I agree that it should be sorted by BMW, but in this case, that's the same as stating that the US should admit they were wrong in invading the Middle East, issue unconditional apologies, and make reparations for the damage they've done.
Nick V, yes occasional FPC failures are still being reported in late 2013 and early 2014. However, instead of concentrating on the year when the fault manifests itself, look instead at the year of the bike's registration.
What you are probably seeing to today is nothing more than the older models washing their way through the system. That and bods whose bikes just stop, where the rider assumes that it's FPC failure, when it's not. There are several threads where the assumption is proved to be very wrong.
I can live with that. Declining failure rates and ham-fisted diagnosis are possibilities. It's just that so little information has been forthcoming that it's been difficult to get a clear picture of what the failure rate has declined to at present versus what it was at it's peak, which components on the board fail most frequently, what causes the failures, etc.
My article's actually about 85% complete at this point, and the rest of the content will be a paint-by-the-numbers job. I might as well finish it up and send it for upload - even if it ends up being nothing more than a curiosity two years from now.
