All,

A couple of weeks ago I installed a Bayer Radio system, a Uniden 5 W radio and a BEL radar detector on my 1200GS.

Against much of what I have read on the net we installed directly into the BMW wiring by splicing off the back of the aux plug (no fuses).

The reason I have not updated you all earlier is that I wanted to leave it for a while to see if anything turned to shite.

Anyway, drum roll please...........

It works fine, no problems, no errors, no system crashes - nothing untoward at all.

The only thing to note is that it takes a while after you turn the key off for everything to turn off.

Hope this helps anyone considering the additions of such gubbins.

Cheers

Phil

Sorry H Marc

I see H Marc has already debunked this..... Sorry HM, credit where credit is due :)

No apology needed, Phil. In fact, I extend my appreciation to you for proving that you can tie aftermarket electrical accessories directly into the CANbus without problems. That's good to know.

But since it's so easy to add a relay , and it offers so many other benefits, I do think it's the way to go...

The wiring to the aux outlet is not a CAN bus. It is just old fashioned wiring coming from the power computer. It is fused with 5A and has a delay (on some of the R12GS's) before it switch of power when the ignition is switched of.

Most of the wiring on the 12GS is actually just standard 12V cabling.

Indeed, similar to my experiences in fitting an additional horn, ignore everything you've heard about the single wire system, just patch a relay in parallel like you would on any other bike.
