Has anyone opened and removed the cat from a standard 1200 GS exhaust ?? i have a 2009 pre twin cam with no flappy valve exhaust and instead of buying headers i thought i could cut the standard pipe open and remove the cat and tig it back up !! any thoughts ?

Cheers Spen

I had this done last summer, you will notice the difference....... but I got a proper set of pipes fitted this year and the difference is night and day.

You will pick up a second hand set on here for very reasonable money.

It cost me €120 to have mine decat'd and welded, in hind sight I should have saved the money and done it right in the first place.

I have done both. A proper set of headers would be first choice. If not s/hand then Black Widow are good. Pretty much a copy of Remus but less than half the price.

I had my original headers decatted. My bike is the same year and model as yours.
I had it done at a local exhaust guy for £40.
I am pleased with the results overall.

did the black widows fit ok seem a quality product?

The gasses will expand into the space ahead of and where the old catalyst sat and then have to squeeze down into the outlet pipe. It will flow better without the catayst block but a tubular system will flow A LOT better for not much more money.

Fit of the detachable pipe into the collector was slightly sloppy but nothing a light smear of high temp silicone sealant won't fix. Nicely made otherwise.

I've cut mine , knocked out the cat and i'll weld them in work on over time on Saturday morning :D thanks for the replies :beerjug:

thats true but if your handy with a tig or mig ,this can be done for nowt

so should i weld a pipe in through where the cat was to stop the gases expanding ??

to be honest i really cant see it making much of a difference, buy hey someone may know better.:thumb
but a good idea all the same

I know this has been covered before but is a re-map honestly required after removing the cat?
These bikes seem able to adapt to changes in exhaust with ease least thats my understanding.
I have all the equipment to open up the cat and reweld it or replace the cat section with a straight tube.
Maybe a job for winter.

Pretty easy to cut it open , drill several holes around the cat and cut it out, a two hour job :jager

No need to re map. As stated, it'll adjust to any small changes to the exhaust.
I've done a spare set of headers and it makes a slight difference but it's noisier.
I bought a cheap disc cutter from B&Q for £17 and just cut along a weld, removed the cat and had it welded up for £20.
Lot of talk about putting in a tube. If you look at the headers, the fronts widen in diameter as they reach the cat. So unless you cut them before they widen and do a lot of fabricating, it's not going to be a success. Not as simple as welding a pipe where the cat is.
This is your first step on the road to trying to obtain perfection. Don't mention re maps, PCV or AF-XIED!! :blast
I'll burn in hell for that!

Keihan exhuast was good and they keep the balance pipe.
Contact them direct i collected mine and paid cash for a good saving

As I see it the only way to avoid heavily compromised gas flow would be to cut off the pressed steel section and fit two bends with a Y joint. After all that, you may as well get a used tubular header.

BTW, don't do ANY arc welding on the bike without unplugging all electronic modules. Simply unplugging the battery isn't enough.

Everybody misses the point that decatted these bikes do between 4 to 7 mpg more as well as running much better!
