Hi all is there much grunt to be gained by doing a decat and is there any difference with just a race can. When I put race can on my Aprilia it made big difference at 5000 rpm.

2008 GSA 60,000+ miles.

Decatted it first, there was a noticeable mid-range increase, seemed to spin up easier. Noticeable but NOT amazing.

Fitted a Akro' rear can, sounded crisper but no difference in performance.

Fitted a set of Akro' headers with the can and it made a big difference, not just noticeable but a marked difference.

In my view the headers made the most increase... If the decat was one step up then the headers was like a further 3 step increase.

Hope this helps..

Roger.

Not sure about the above, my headers removed the cat - much better, IMHO, but also much louder and my pillion is not a fan!

I have an Akraprovic shotgun system with baffles so noise is reasonable. The bike is crisp and responsive. The standard can on Remus decat headers was louder. Comparative performance between the two is hard to say but certainly junking the standard headers made a big difference. I'd expect a bigger benefit from remap with my shotgun system than a remap with standard can on aftermarket headers.

Edit without baffles my shotgun system is very rippy. It loses most of the low frequency grumble noise. It has ordinary aftermarket baffles that are about 30mm diameter at the back end on a spacer to centralise into the 48mm pipe outlet. I had a 48mm baffle but it virtually welded itself into the pipe outlet and was not appreciably less noisy even though it basically plugged the outlet.

I have obtained a set of original headers for my 2008 GSA from which I have had the cat removed. I will be using the standard silencer with this header set and intend to get a Hilltop remap in the near future. My bike has the standard air filter fitted.

Questions:

Before the remap - Will it run leaner with just the cat removed?

Before the remap - Should I fit a K&N filter to help it breath easier or will this make it run leaner?

At/just before the remap - Would you recommend fitting a K&N filter or leave the standard one fitted?

My only reason for doing any of the above it to have a smooth running bike. Will the rough spot at 4000RPM be improved by doing this?

Thanks for any input:thumb2

Thr remap will improve things whatever exhaust set up you have. I personally wouldn't touch a K + N with a barge pole however.

Yep K&Ns are a pain in the ass to clean and make no difference -

Geoff at Hilltop recommends the standard paper filter. I had a K&N prior to remap so I bought a paper filter and the K&N is languishing somewhere in the garage.
