You need a small sheet of asbestos to sit it on, make it safe

I filled the stove to just below the gas holes using Ooni wood pellets, lit it using two of the wood shaving type fire lighters, let it catch properly and bunged on a small titanium kettle. It took a few seconds over 7 minutes to come to the boil and at a guess I’d say there’s about 1hr left of burn time but I’ll check that later.

The kettle had 700ml in it after boiling so that’s either 2 small cups or 1 large cup of tea :D

I hope my knock-off Chinese thing does as well.

I’ll be testing it out, later in the month, with a report and pictures and stuff.


New question: Pellet things. Any advantages of one over an other? There seems to be a huge range in price, for stuff that looks at least remarkably similar. Or is it like charcoal, cheap is shite….. buy something decent, preferably the same as your local kebab shop uses?

I was surprised at how well it worked and it kept the heat directly under the kettle meaning I could lift if off using the wire handles without using anything to protect my hand.

Final decent burn time was about 50 minutes, there’s still a bit of heat being emitted from what’s left after 75 minutes which may be enough to keep something warm but not enough to be simmering something.

Edit: I’d been using a Weber kettle bbq as the fire base and I popped the lid on about 15 minutes ago while the stove was just finishing off the pellets. I’ve just check and the thermometer on the lid says it’s at 150c so maybe you could simmer something for up to 90 minutes.

Decent ones definitely seem to burn hotter. I got better results from Ooni own branded ones and my guess would be that if you fill to just below the gas holes you could make a brew then be drinking it as you fried bacon & eggs and heat what was left in your kettle for a second cup as you ate your sandwich.
 
What more do you want for £14. Great bits of kit for sure.
The pellets do the job well too.

It’ll be interesting to see how you get on. Another pleasant surprise was that it was remarkably clean burning once it had got going. There was a little bit of what’s best described as yellow ‘tar’ on the bottom and about 1/4 of the way up the sides then a very small amount of soot nearer to the top of the kettle. When I’ve used twigs to fuel my Kelly kettle soot is a definite issue and you need to clean it properly or get dirty hands next time you use it.

The clean burning might be because of the fact that I was using a titanium kettle or it may be the size, whatever the reason it’s a bonus.

You used a lot more pellets than I put in to see how it looks. I tried 300g ( only cos the chap in the vid did ) but may initially try more.
When I tried the kindling I got a lot of sticky tar like residue on the bottom of my pot. I’m sure that was from the bark that was on some of it but the 2 bags of kindling I chopped up ready I removed it. Again, it’ll be good to see if that’s less too.

I wiped the soot off with a damp cloth and the tar like stuff had dried very quickly (almost as if it was resin) so I’m not worried about that.

If the weathers good tomorrow and I get bored I might try something a bit bolder than just a kettle, nothing too extensive but just see what can be done before I actually rely on it and fall down.
 
If you coat the bottom of the pot or kettle with washing up liquid first the soot washes off much more easily. Make sure you don't get the w/up liquid on the inside of the pot though.
