Its coming to 6 months of gloom, commuting 250 miles a week in dark wet and cold conditions...

I'm considering spending out on a gortex rain suit, but not sure where to look? I've got a full goretex liner for my twatsuit, but I'd rather leave that suit hanging up for the summer months and get something hardcore for the winter time.

I've looked at the Aerostich stuff, but can not find a UK dealer, so I'm guessing I'll be "taken from behind" by customs for shed loads of duty?

I'd be willing to spend up to 4 figures if I could find the right suit, but where to look??

Any London based dealers, or recomended online dealers for said high quality gear would be apprecieated.

Cheers,

Gareth.

I can vouch for Hein Gericje gear (Master/ Cruise)
People speak very highly of Halvarssons.
I also have a GI moto suit from Giali which has been very good (similar to a 'Stitch but they may be discontinued?

I've had HG stuff before, infact, I use a pair of overtrousers which are HG sheltex (or somthing sounding like that). They leek in the seat area and havn't really inspired confidence!

If you think their goretex stuff is that good (£800 it should be!) I may go and take a gander...

Spidi Ergo jacket! They also do matching trousers. I've got HG and BMW gear as well but the Spidi is always my first choice for the wet or cold times.

Had two Spidi jackets, never leaked, warm, great pockets, comfortable. Does what it should do!

Got my last one from Infinity at Hangar Lane, don't know if they're still there.

I notice they also do a "robust" fitting - is that a "GS" fit?:D

250 miles a week? You won't be out long enough to get wet!

Seriously, my commute is 600 miles a week, and you would not believe the number of times I have NOT needed a rain suit in the winter. This country is not as wet as it's made out to be. Cold, yes, but wet, no. The chances of you needing serious rain protection for 250/5 = 50 miles a day, at say, 50 mph = 1 hour a week, every week, is actually very small. We just don't get that amount of rain. My solution is to stick with my regular gear (leathers) and carry a one-piece oversuit - 30 quid will do it. Then, and only then, when it looks threatening, whip the oversuit on. Save your hard earned overdraft.

I understand your point, but we can't all commute at 50 miles per hour!

I commute through to the west end of london... nuff said! I own a rain (shell) suit (shi!t quality from BMW this one IMHO), but I'm missing my old yokomoto goretex jacket, which I could just wear, come rain/ice/snow... infact, I could wear it this winter, but its jsut a bit too big these days (although thinking of saving a few hundred quid, to spend on toys is becoming an idea:thumb2)

Gareth, I've been very happy with my Rukka gear and with the customer service they provide. More details at http://forum.bmw-club.org.uk/viewtopic.php?t=10186&highlight=. I have "roadtested" their stuff, and it works :). 'Nuff said... The stuff is not cheap but the after-sales service is among the best I have ever encountered.

In London Infinity carry it, as do J&S Accessories in New Malden, which may be closer to you.

cold /wet weather gear

I have a matching Hein Gerrick cruise trouser / jacket suit and absolutely can vouch for them. I have commuted 25k miles over the past 2.5 years plus on three different BMW bikes and the gear is top draw. I know some have has problems with leaking trousers but I have not had this problem. The other key thing:rob is that the goretex is woven / laminated to the outer shell with a zippable thermal inner which makes far more sense than having a zippable goretex liner feck*** stupid idea such as the twatsuits have... Even some of the RUKKA gear has removable gore liners:blast and you have to pay £750+ for the pucka stuff. The HG suits are £299 jackets and £199 for trousers (zippable dungarees/kidney protectors)

Anyhow, the HG gear has a two year guarantee with courtesy gear during repair. The sleeve zips went on mine but were repaired FOC.

The new HG cruise 2 green/black HiVi jakets do not have the goretex lining in the outside breast pockets which is daft..the grey and black cruise jackets do.

I would recommend this gear.

I've had a few sets of HG kit and none has ever made it through two winters without leaking. Seams split, buttons & zips broke and the outer material wore through. Admittedly that's doing 12k+ miles a year but after almost drowning on a trip to Germany in 2005 it was time for some better kit.

For the last 3 years I've been wearing a Rukka Steel jacket (£369)& Pro-tech trousers (£359). The gore-tex is woven into the outer layer so the zip out liners are for extra warmth only. 5 year guarantee & loan kit sealed the deal for me.

Bought mine from the local Infinity shop. Replacing all my kit at the same time meant a nice little discount :D

If you're happy to spend four figures, Armacor Rukka should be top of your list. A proper 5yr guarantee against leaks and general wear and tear i.e. zips/velcro - important if you use daily.

Normal run of the mill gear wiv liners and a rain suit..agreed. :beerjug:

I use a HG maxwell jacket and over trousers which keeps the rain out and was a reasonable price. If you want to be warm get yourself an electric waistcoat/jacket liner. Once you have tried one you'll never go back.

Been riding in Rukka Armax for the last few weeks also have the trousers to go with it, solid piece of kit and well worth the dosh especially with a 5 year guarantee. I find it's fit and quality superior to the HG kit. I wear it almost everyday for commuting, I wear office trousers and shirt underneath and been down to 2 degrees so far and it's nice and warm (detachable lining), it also has the TFL cool system for those warmer days!

One great 'feature' is that the safety yellow really gets you noticed, especially when riding up behind motorists on dual carriageways, I think they think you might be a copper and pull over a little quicker than before (the sheer presence of the GSA also helps).

Mrs Moto has a Goretex lined two piece that's five years old now, still 100% dry in the pissingdownest rain and warm too....

All in was about £400.

Seriously, my commute is 600 miles a week

My commute was just short of 800 a week and I got fed up with thecommuting killing my love of biking and ruining my weekends... so take the train now...!!! Maybe I should have bough a Goretex suit!!!

Halvarssons Safety Jacket and trousers vs Rukka Armax

They're both waterproof, both very safe, both well made, only one's half the price of the other.

for the last year ive been going out to sea with the lifeboat and been in some of the worst weather and ive not been wet yet so i started to look at the MUSTO sailing gear for the bike it is 100% waterproof it has water and wind seals and you can get it in all colours with kevlar in the knees and elbows etc it starts from £100 and goes up.
