Finally bought myself a nice 2004 twin spark Rockster . ( Stll have the airhead though :) )
Now I've gone all modern I realise that the nearside stick coil is goosed :(
As these modern 1150's are new to me.....do I replace both at the same time ( makes sense to me :nenau ) and if so, where is the best place to get them.
Both are in shit order TBH...the nearside one even smoked for me when I cleaned everything up :D
Motorworks are £83 and MotoBins are £85 ( shame I don't live near them as they have a 20% sale for visitors only on 14th may :comfort ).
We all like a few pics......

I've often wondered with these weirdy WBM stick coils, what's to stop you using a normal coil with a lead run down to the head (cheaper and out of the way of the engine's heat)? Or am I missing something?

I'm sure I read somewhere, either here or on ADV, that someone had done exactly that. Sorry I can't be any more help than that, but I'm sure someone has done it. 👍

I got mine from Williams in Manchester, worked out a couple of quid cheaper Kenny but they are dear. They are much better now as they are the same as the early 1200 and you don't hear of the 1200 popping stick coils as often as the 1150's did. They have a stainless cover on them now.

There are lots of reasons to keep the BMW design on the 1150. The most important thing to know is the the dwell time on the stick coil is minimal. BMW used the same coil in the R1200 and doubled the dwell. The short dwell can lead to a weak spark. Any remote coil you use in place of the stick should have identical characteristics.

What I learned experimenting with the stick coils is that many R1150 twin sparks do not have the 2nd Load Relay, which is located to the left of the Coding Plug if is installed. BMW changed it late in the R1150 run. That relay boosts the battery voltage to the coils, by eliminating a large voltage drop across the key switch, helping to make up for the short dwell time.

Here's how to add it: http://ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php/401537-R1150R-GS-RT-2nd-Load-Relay-for-Twin-Spark.

Well everything worked fine until the other day when the starter motor expired and destroyed the Motobatt battery in the process ( won't accept any charge and completely dead ). Anyways, new starter arriving tomorrow with new Excide gel battery. Re the battery ( hey, I'm used to airheads remember :D ) is it just a case of reconnecting the new battery up and then enjoying the bike or is there that remove fuse 5 option etc to go through ?

Yeah, you will need to re set the TPS.

Ignition on but don't start the bike....open and close the throttle, (I did it 3 times closing it by hand rather than letting it snap shut)....ignition off then your hot to trot.

Must say it worked wonders with my Rockster, always had a bit of vibration around the 4000 mark but now I've dome the reset thingy bike runs far smoother.

So is that fuse 5 thing an option?
