Declaring "mods"

Yes it’s a good idea.

Some are classed as ‘accessories’ and some are classed as ‘modifications’.
I told the last insurance bod about everything non-standard on my bike and he said some wouldn’t affect the premium ( apart from the fact that they raised the bike’s value and may have a minor effect on the premium) and he was more concerned with stuff that was deemed to improve the performance and possibly adversely affect the inherent safety of the vehicle done by owners who think they know better than the manufacturer (17 inch wheel on a GS anyone..?) … modified ecu ( Hilltop anyone?), exhausts and mods to wheels, braking systems, the list goes on.

Also be aware that the list of stuff you declare on the comparison sites doesn’t necessarily transfer across to the insurance company and may not appear on their system or your paperwork.
Hilltop won't affect performance

My sv1000 has a gsxr1000 k5 front end, maxton rear shock, power commander carbon fibre bits and bike sure are the only people who will insure it,it's also the most expensive of my four to insure but it's better to be safe than sorry.

Here’s Bennett’s list of things acceptable as modifications. Note that radiator guards and crash bungs aren’t included…..

Ten years or so ago my mate was with I believe Footman James and at renewal time for his 4 bikes the call centre chimp went through the list of whether the bikes were standard as they were supplied new . Being in a smart arsed mood he replied "NO" explaining that the tyres were not original on any of his bikes nor was the air in the tyres , that all had replacement chains and sprockets , that his 1987 Gpz750 had replacement NOS silencers fitted , his CRM 250 had replacement graphics and his XL250 Motorsport had a replacement NOS tank, seat and exhaust.
Chimp turns around and says "sorry we cannot insure you with those modifications , goodbye "

Many years ago, while insuring a motorbike I was asked if I had any prior convictions.
Jokingly I responded: "Hopefully not if we don't consider parking tickets" - of which I've had a few back at that time.

Before I could explain it was a joke, the chimp said she had to check and I ended up waiting 20 minutes in line while she was reassured by a superior that no one cares about parking tickets.

These days I just state what asked in the most limited and serious manner :D :D :D

You just have to answer the insurance companies questions honestly, you don't have to volunteer information. If they ask if the vehicle has been modified (including accesories) then you should tell them if it has been - simples.

Apparently hilltop 'map' is hidden. Which is accurate as no one can find it, wonder why 🤔

And bods wonder why the insurance intermediaries “Charge £20 to make a bloody simple change, mate”….. it’s to pay for the time wasting chimps at either end of the phone line.
