Am considering purchasing an old shape 90/110.

Needs to be in good condition as looking for a daily driver.

Budget could be flexible for the right vehicle.

I’ve been tentatively looking around too. As well as the fully rebuilt costing many, many tens of thousands there are those being sold in the trade that have shiny paint jobs and a set of flashy wheels but fundamentally are a tired old farm vehicle underneath. It’s a minefield .

My late brother had a Landrover Wolf, I must get all the details and photos and find out what it’s worth and where to advertise it. It needs a fair bit of work I think though did run within the last year so that’s something.

MOD sell off their kit all the time, apparently there are a good number of Defenders available at the moment and there looks to be a few websites selling them. The ‘wolf’ versions have a better quality chassis than the retail offerings. Having owned a number of LR’s over the years, the 90 TD5 was by far the worst for a whole host of reasons. They look great but the driving and ownership experience leaves a lot to be desired, in my opinion.

My mate’s wife was looking for one recently. We saw many exactly as you describe, beautiful shiny paint but a shocker underneath.

At one ‘retailer’ we visited, on the way into the farm we saw another unit where old knackers were lined up to go through the spray booth.

I’d err towards a private seller.

I found the TD5 lump to be utterly reliable in both the Discoverys and Defenders I have owned. It is the 200/300 tdi owners that normally slag them of for having too much reliance on electronics, which is tosh.

Everyone has their own opinion on defenders. I drove loads during my 22 years in the army. Have had 4 of my own in the last 15 years. 2 90 TD5’s and 2 110 2.2’s. The TD5 engine is great and grunty. Benefits of the 2.2 include being able to have a conversation at 70mph. I overservice my vehicles and haven’t had any major issues with any. Get underneath and have a good look / dig as well as chassis / bulkhead checks. I mainly use my current 110 van to tow my caravan , love it but do miss some creature comforts!

I suspect my lovely neighbour bought one of those. Lovely and shiney, but when he's managed to fire it up, it sounds like a very sad, wheezy old vehicle. Never mind, he gets it out of his triple garage on fine days and parks it on his huge barren drive, lined up at 45 degrees, facing towards the road. Then gets his Ferrari California out as well (personal plate, natch) and lines that up alongside. Come the evening, he puts them away again. We're not fans. We've not found anyone else in the village who is, either.
