if i have windows defender, do i still need avast???????

I don't know. I run AVG free and Defender under Vista and have been infection-free since I bought the computer a year ago. I also run ZoneAlarm Free instead of the Windows firewall. The reservation that some users have about using only Microisoft protection tools is that they don't stop Windows components from telling Microsoft what you are running. It's amazing how oftyen ZoneAlarm tells me that some part of Windows is calling home.

Yes. Defender only checks for malware and Avast/AVGchecks fro Virus... Different things but very similar.
