Definitive GS1150 seat discussion

I've just done 5700km on my bike in a month around Jordan, Syria, Turkey and Iran, with a sheep under my rear. I was in bloody agony after 2 hours. It felt like my arse was on fire. Not what you need as a distraction when dodging BFO trucks and donkeys. 650km MAX as the pain was too great, but this was on CRAP roads most of the time.

Time to get a new seat :(

Regards

Colin

P.S Great to be back :)

I have bars from the R1150R fitted to my 1150GS. The bars aren't as wide and pitch you slightly further foward.

Since the picture was taken I have swapped to a newer 1150, but taken the R1150R bars with me.

I have also put bar risers on (about 1.25 inches) and that has made it even more comfortable - 600 miles in a day with only a slightly numb bum by the end of it.

The R1150R bars just seem to make the difference between too much weight on your bum and just the right amount of weight.

Because I'm pitched slightly further forward and my arms aren't as widely stretched as standard 1150GS bars would make them, I catch less wind pressure on my chest and therefore ease the pressure on my bum still further.

Having tried the standard 1150GS set up subsequently, there's no way I would go back now.

I'm 6ft 1 and on the cuddly side :D

Standard seat on my 2000 model GS1150 was comfortable for about 30 miles before the foam compressed onto the base, I have tried three hire bikes and a demonstrator, two were excellent for 250 miles plus (Austrian Bikes), two an English bike and an Austrian bike were hell after 30 to 40 miles.
It appears that BMW use different suppliers for the foams which can vary greatly in density .
I had my seat modified with a gel pad and new cover plus extra foam and it was good for 100 miles at a time.
Cycle shorts are OK but just seem to delay the inevitable pain.
A home made air cushion seat,(a camping pillow, 1/4 inflated allows 500 plus miles in a day ) . So perhaps an Airhawk pad is the answer, after trying them at the Munich Show they do seem very impressive. The advice from staff there was to go for the more expensive neoprene not plastic version.
I bought a new red front seat from E Bay and it is excellent as standard ,also the standard rear seat has caused no problems at all for my pillion.
The answer seems to be that it is a combination of riding position and your own anatomy, plus a lottery as to the standard seat foam as to whether the bike is comfortable or hell.
Finally a comment from a German GS1150 owner was that if you have a fat Germand A*** you will be comformtable, his view not mine.
