Just a quick post to say how delighted I am with my new Wilbers shocks in case anyone else is contemplating fitting them.

My stock suspension was a bit coarse after 25k, and the front end felt like it was going to wash out when pushing on a bit into corners. I bought a pair of Wilbers shocks (630 front/640 Rear with Hydraulic preload option) designed for my rider weight/riding style of 100KG with 35KG luggage, lowered by 1/2" front and rear due to my 29" inside leg.

The shocks come pre-set and ready to fit as if dialled in. Without any fine tuning the ride is so much more plush, I can dive into corners hard on the brakes with no fear of the front tucking, and the little off-roading I tried yesterday was very well damped and controlled. On the road, the front suspension is now a lot more 'busy' absorbing the road and controlling the ride. Turn-in rate seems a lot quicker with a bit more feedback about what the tyre is doing.

I paid £690 including P&P and Vat from "every accessory" (AKA Revs racing services) in Halesowen, West Mids. This is the discounted price for being a UKGSer member. When you compare the price of Ohlins etc, it's a similar product at a much better price, and is bespoke to your requirements rather than "off the peg".

It has transformed my R1200GS, I am well chuffed. A highly recommended purchase.:thumb2

spooky......................i have just ordered some to lower my bike for me....same shocks and all...........and the hubby a back one so he can tour with him and all our luggage without it wallowin in the corners..........should have them just after bank holiday.....how long did it take for yours to be delivered? as i'm off with the girls off here and i want them back in time for the 1st june............................:thumb2

It took 2 and a half weeks from ordering to receiving.

Be warned that the rear shock can be a sod to remove, my lower bolt into the swingarm goes through a steel bushing which had pinched up tight onto the old OE shock. I had to beat out the shock from the swingarm with a piece of wood, then drift out the bush, clean it up and reinsert it.

The front shock requires the plastic alternator cover to be removed to give an extra smidgen of room for removal.

Overall the new shocks took about 2 hours to fit with a set of basic tools and some loctite/molybdenum grease.

I'm sure you will be delighted with the new suspension once its fitted Janie.

Hi Adam. Just doing some research on Wilbers before ordering and saw your post re the 1/2 inch lowered shocks. I was wondering if you had any problems using both the centre stand and the side stand.

Can I take this opportunity to endorse “Revs” and “Every Accessory” as the top of this thread says.

I payed an extra 80 quid to get the front and rear shocks fitted (whilst me and the Mrs went into Halesowen shopping!!). Would have liked to fit them myself, but convenience and total lack of space made it just easier for it to be done. (there’s a how-to on the gs info web site)
Anyway, the guys took pride in their work, and i did not even notice any smudge marks from dirty hands.
The shocks are awesome. My 04 GS has done 54k and although I was on my third rear shock (all under BMW warranty) the front had 'done the miles'. Over 40k of that was 2 up, so a hard life was had by the front.)

The difference between these and Ohlins shocks (as I was told) is that the Wilburs are made to order as per your weight. That means the valving and the spring is correct, as opposed to just the spring if you run Ohlins.

It's wierd, cos the standard suspension is not that bad, and you can ride the gs pretty quick, but the difference is amazing with the Wilburs.

It’s just so smooth to ride…..

80 quid is a bargain

I would have happily paid that and more to fit mine :blast. Took me hours plus much swearing, skinned knuckles etc.

Two of us on the job took us 50 minutes to fit both....no probs.:augie

Just followed the methods listed on this forum:thumb2

Utterly better bike:thumb

eighty quid seems very cheap to me...

...and i wrote the guide

so what is the result of lowering? any downsides which are noticible? lack of ground clearance? stand? etc etc

I put a pair of wilbers that will give me a 10mm lower ride height. result is considerable in terms of reaching the ground. Sidestand is ok but expect the centerstand to require quite a hefty pull especially when loaded with luggage. Go for the 641 rear instaed of the 640. Its a much better shock and gives you more options to play with. No problems with ground clearance.
