MUsing my machine yesterday, everything running fine ,on the internet had a few windows open and then ............ machine just stopped as if unplugged
no error messages, nothing just as if swithched off.
Tried to restart but nothing , no harddrive boot , fans or nothing.
Checked fuse and power supply to machine OK
With this machine its easy to remove side panels , when swithced on a green LED lights up on the mother board, but nothing else happens, gave all connections a 'wriggle'

The on off button on the front of the machine is illuminated with a green light to let you know the machine is running, now this lights up and flashes amber, even if the mains lead is removed for a while , but goes out if the machine is switced on with the mains lead out, residual current from capacictor ?
anyway does anyone have a logical explanation why the green lamp has changed to amber ??

all suggestions greatlfully accepted

Had same problem on wifes DELL.
turned out to be Duff power supply>>£20 from ebay and it's been going ever since will be 12 months in August....

The low power side 5v will light the leds but the other voltage supplies >>12v or 15v can fry separately..
Piece of Piss to change:thumb2

just a few examples on sale

I think KA 8964 is the one you may be after

EDIT>> sometimes the power supply fan will still work if outputs are fried but usually doen't

A similar thing happens with their servers. They have mutliple power supplies but will run with only one connected. If all supplies are connected the indicators light green, but it one or more are disconnected or fail the indicator turns amber. Given that you probably only have one power supply, I would tend to agree with proff. Probable power supply problem.

According to the manual for my Dell 8300, the power light codes are:

Blinking green - standby mode

Off - Power is off or computer is not receiveing power :blast

Amber and green - internal power problem

Steady amber - as above (but with less solutions)

Blinking amber - "a device might be malfunctioning or incorrectly installed.
Ensure that the microprocessor power cable is securely connected to the System Board. If problem persists, contact Dell"

Thanks for all the replies
agree the power supply seems the most logical, but the green LED on the mother board threw me a bit
Tried it again the next day and it works again , and had remained OK so far, but bet look out for a replacemnt power supply.
Must admit my faith in Dell hass gone down hill , quality on this machine has been crap,in twelve moths its needed a new video card, disc drive, plus the Indian call centre, dont think i will buy another one
but the help from here has cheered me up !

When my (aged) mother's pc died (she got her first pc at the age of 83:clap ), I bought a power supply checking gizmo from Maplins which checks all the +/- power supplies and allows you to identify if the power supply is at fault rather than the mother board.

Might help.

thanks again for all the good advice, i have ben using my lap top for a while so have not bothered too much but when the machine 'dies' it stays dead for upto a few days ( with blinking amber) then will start again and show solid green light, runs for anything up to a week, sometimes running 8 hours a day as normal. so its not repeatable ie time on = heat = failure
I have removed all the cards and checked that they are all OK and no signs of any burn marks etc ,
best guess still the power supply ?

many thanks
