dell laptop advice?

I basically know not alot about laptops, but ive been offerd a Dell Latitude C610 Laptop, it has Pentium III 1GHz, 256 MB RAM, 20 GB hard disk, built in 56k modem, CD ROM, 3.5" floppy drive, battery, power supply, carry bag
Windows XP Professional.
For sale for £180, is this a decent price? How good is this laptop for this price?
or would the money be better spent on something else??? recomendations or advice anyone?

That isn't a bad price for the laptop, if all you need to do is surf the net, check emails and write the odd document here and there..

Best way to check it to look at the drive.

On the side it will be labled with some of the following CD / CD+RW / CD-RW / DVD -R / DVD-RW etc etc.

If it has DVD anywhere on it, it will play DVDs, if not it is just a plain CD drive (my money would be on it just being a CD drive).

If it can't play DVDs there are cheap and easy solutions (Send me a PM and I might be able to help if/when you buy it )

Just bought one of these fro my daughter. very good price for a laptop. Got a free memory upgrade to 512mb RAM and free delivery too . about 350 quid all in - brand new - with software.

Not many (if any) of the Dell 610s got the DVD drives as they were new, shiney and expensive at the time those laptops came out, so most companies went for the 24x CD ROM option. However, Dell do still sell the CD ROM drives (at a much more reasonable price now), or if you're feeling a little confident in your avilities it's not diffictult to take the old CD ROM out of the external casing and replace it with a low profile DVD drive (you just lose the curved fitting)

I wouldn't be too gutted since it's quite an old laptop (4-5 years) with mediocre performance/facilities. I think you could find something else quite a bit better for @ £200+
