My laptop went tits up yesterday (good job I bought this little netbook here last week) and I am looking for a new one. Mainly stays on the desk, used only for surfing, emails, photos etc and money is an issue.

Don't know about processesors and the like (difference between Athlon, Pentium etc) so point me in the direction of something on the high st which will be a good buy. Budget under £350.

Try the Argos outlet - factory refurbished units with a 12 month warranty. Choice of leading brands, even one with a 17" screen in your budget.

On the look out for one myself, current laptop being held together with gaffa tape after the screen hinge broke. Dell always do a good one, brand new your looking at £370 but i'd check out the refurbed units above. I'd avoid Advent as in my opinion the keyboards are shite. Processor isnt that important for you as youre only surfing and emailing etc. Processor becomes more important when you want to run large files such as large spreadsheets and graphics programs such as games etc.

Dell outlet online

Although I was a bit wary of buying a Dell - it would not have been my first preference, despite using them for years through work and always found them very reliable, but was convinced to have a look at their outlet site online after alot of research.

It's a bit like TK Maxx - what they have in today, may not be there tomorrow. So if you see something that fits the bill, buy it.

But I got a £575 notebook for £320 and it's superb. Described as having a scratch and dent on the case, I've looked high and low and cannot find any cosmetic marks on it at all.

And to top it all, you get the Dell warranty etc with it....

Well worth a browse......

Why not go on your local Loot and find a cheap desktop?
A lot of people are upgrading and some good deals to be had.
A good desktop for £100 is plenty good for surfing the net \ emails.

Try Comet, you cant go wrong with an ACER, Ive got one for 300 quid there with Win7 wifi and decent processor and ram.

You CAN go very wrong with ACER they have one of the worst backup/customer services in the industry, now only open 0900-1600 Monday to Friday and ALL customer service and tech support is based in India, if you never have a problem they are great if you ever do have a problem you will be wishing you had bought something else.
ASUS are a far better bet

I disagree. I bought my 17yo lad an Acer laptop complete with 3 year warranty, theft & accidental damage package. The lad has a neurological condition that means he's very hard on anything technical. So, during the 3 years we had 2 new screens, a new keyboard and PSU due to his little idiosynchrasies. They also fixed it after "it stopped working" (no idea if this was a hardware fault or induced as it went away and came back working).

Every time he or his mother (they don't live with me) contacted Acer (based in Netherlands apparently) the problem was addressed immediately. They either sent a replacement part as with the PSU or arranged for DHL to collect the thing to take it to their repair centre. They never had it for more than a few days.

He's 21 now and is still using the laptop, although it is not covered by the warranty. He seems to be less rough with things now. Probably because he has a girlfriend and seems generally calmer.

IMV, Acer products are good value for money and I've even bought one of their netbooks for me to type this reply.

thats all very well, but it does not alter in any way what I said, their tech support is only open mon-fri during the working day, they will not discuss an issue unless you are in front of the computer and if you work normal hours that is pretty difficult, Acer UK are actualy based in Devon (Plymouth I think) and up to 2 years ago you got through to an agent based there and they were great, however since then they are crap.
I have an ACER desktop and my daughter a laptop, they were great at fixing the laptop just took it back to the store, but when the software went tits up they were hopeless, they have got NO real tech support at all, and if you aint at home during the working day they are worse than useless.
I wouldn't have another one if I were given it, oh I was and gave it away !!!
