Dell laptop - PC Restore - how?????

Hi all

The Mrs's laptop has gone doo lally!!!!

Won't boot up the operating system. Have managed to run the diagnostics which gives the following message

IDE Disk s/n = X5MT2755T READ TEST
NO ADDITIONAL SENSE INFO
TEST RESULTS - FAIL
ERROR CODE 0F00:0244
MSG - BLOCK 43769459 UNCORRECTABLE DATA ERROR OR MEDIA

Means nothing to me not being a techie!!!

So thinking just reboot the whole system, but of course I can't get to the user manual which is on the pc (No, I wasn't bright enough to print it off previously and can't find the original hard copy!!!)

I know it's probably a series of key presses, but have tried a few and can't get it.................Anyone know wot it is and can let me know.

Any other suggestions more than welcome.

Oh, have tried system restore but all the restore points have disappeared!!!!

Please help me not to waste money on a new laptop - think of all those GS goodies I can buy with it!!!!!

Found it!!!!

Control and F11 during boot up (in case anyone else needs it)

Just need to re-install all my software now!!!!!!!

It looks like the HD has developed some bad sectors.

Is the machine still under warranty? - if so, then get Dell to sort it. If it is out of warranty, and assuming that you have backed up your data, you might want to think about replacing the HD. If you are not into fixing pc's, the restore and diagnostic stuff might not be your cup of tea.

You can spend ages trying to sort it - but bearing in mind replacement HD's are reasonably cheap, it is sometimes easier to replace.

'Google' in the error code, and you will get loads of hits with advice and so on.....

Good luck, and lets hope that you wife backed up the data?

yes, it sounds to me as if the HDD is rather bolloxed.
