Was out on the new 1200 GS today over a moorland well rutted road above Settle in the Yorks Dales. All was going well until I hit a large rock with the R/H header pipe putting a dent into it about 8mm deep underneath just where the cross pipe is welded between the two downpipes. The bike seems fine and I don't think I can notice any difference, although it's only got 500 miles on the clock so I haven't really opened up above 5000 revs. What do you all think - will it affect performance engine breathing etc or will the cross pipe balance things up????. Ive had several boxers BMW's berfore, but this is my first off road one so am not really familiar with this type of damage!!!. Have to say I love the bike but even with the O/E crash bars on the engine is a bit exposed for off road work and I think could be very easily damaged in a tumble. Am I being paronoid and have you off roaders experienced this sort of thing as a run of the mill incident!!!!.

Repairs

I had a Firestorm and dented the pipe on a bump on the entrance to the car park near Holmfirth TV mast. Not enough pre-load when the bike was two up.:(

Local bike shop though repaired it by drilling a hole in it to allow a puller in it, and once back to its normal shape added a blob of weld to fill the hole up.:D Couldn't see it either because it was on the bottom and not easily viewable.:D

That speedbump's a killer!! Nearly lost my whole exhaust system on that bugger once ... on a very overloaded GPz500 :D
