Details of mountings for OEM aluminium panniers on 1200GSA

Hi

I use a set of ARDCases on my GSA but want fit one of these: http://www.advdesigns.com/rurelotoforb.html

Unfortunately, the fixings for the ARDCases make this impossible. I've attached a couple of poor pictures to give you an idea of how they work.

I would like to copy the mounting plate that must be on the inner face of the OEM boxes and which mates with the flanges on the pannier frames.


Can someone send me good pictures of the inner faces of the OEM aluminium panniers please? And ditto pictures of the means of securing the panniers to the rack?

What you might need is a rear opening box not side open,maybe attach to pannier itself ? it'll be a diy job if your mechanically/engineer minded not that hard,Iv made a box fit that shouldn't & had to reweld two rack tubes but perfect now.

Hi and thanks for a quick reply.

I've looked at rear opening boxes but they they are much smaller than the Advdesigns case. Even the Cymark case is smaller - and the same price. The Advdesign case is fixed against the lower flange that mates with the OEM mounting system and the upper parts of the rack. The fixings for my cases protrude beyond the flanges. I don't want to cut the existing rack about nor do I want to do the same to the Advdesigns toolbox. I'm a competent 'shed' welder and general bodger so can make the required fixings but I want to see them first in case there are subtleties in their design.

The other benefit is that the existing clamps on my panniers are secured from the inside which is a right pain to use when it's raining and/or the panniers are rammed full of kit. I have found a supplier for the OEM catches for the panniers.

Absolutely perfect.

Thank you for sparing the time to take the pictures. It is, as I thought, a simple tongue that engages with another tongue. I guess that the slightly complex shape to the whole panel is to give stiffness to the supporting side of the pannier without adding too much mass. It's just the sort of thing that Cymark could turn out

Doe the slot visible in the flange at the top of photo /20141112_132956.jpg.html serve any useful purpose?

Moto24 have confirmed that the discription is wrong and that the clamps fit either pannier.

The slot has no purpose except maybe somewhere to thread a strap. The pannier is put on the rail and slid backwards to engage with the tongues then locked in.

Thought it would make more sense to slide them forwards in case the securing mechanism failed but hey ho. Glad I could help.

Indeed, I would have thought that sliding forwards would make more sense. Maybe BMW believe that the load caused by accelaration could be too much for the clamps?

I'm at the 'gathering courage' stage of the process and won't start doing anything until my bike is back here which won't be until my garage has been finished - never get your brother-in-law to do any building work for you :-(

All I would say is make sure the box does not rub the tyre under load,that's a real problem if it's not standard fitting !

Hi Bikemad

Which box do you think will rub the tyre? The panniers won't 'cos they are outside the racks and the ADVDesign toolbox won't 'cos they built it not to - even to the extent of making a cut-out to accommodate the brake caliper. I do concede that they say you must remove the little crap catcher from the swinging arm.

The bottom line is that I want to use the ADVDesign toolbox without having to buy OEM panniers to replace my ARDCases panniers.

Check the swing arm position on full bump it's got a heck of a travel.

Have you noticed how much space is wasted on the left. There is enough space between tyre and side frame for a 100mm exhaust can AND a full size case.
The Adv carriers are a whole pile of afterthoughts. Chopped out LH case because they refused to fit a tall narrow exhaust
Top case sat on an afterthought extra rack. More metal for no user benefit.
Frames made really strong & heavy but attached to bike with plastic brackets and M6 bolts.
Complex paint digging clamp brackets when pillion footrest has a perfect mounting point.
The list goes on.

Yes, it's very much an afterthought. I must investigate the fittings. That must be why BM specify such low pannier loads.

I'm pretty confident that the American toolbox won't contact the FD (a) 'cos they say that they put the cut-out in the box to guard against such an event so appear to have considered the possibilty and (b) I doubt that I will enounter sufficiently big bumps/deep drops to compress the rear suspension that far . . . .

All it takes is a bigger than normal bump in the road and it could go to full travel.

Haynes says 220mm for Adv or 200 for GS measured at axle.

Put bike on centre stand and measure up from whatever part might hit the case.
