I’ve just booked a crossing from Hull to Rotterdam and return in September for 8 riders, 8 bikes in four premier cabins at a cost of £211 per head with no meals booked. Out of curiosity I priced the ferry from DFDS Newcastle to Holland. For similar accommodation the cost shot up to £459 per head. We are all based on Tyneside and the ride to Hull is not an inconvenience. The difference in fares will pay a big chunk of the petrol bill. DFDS - you need some competition on that route

Was just looking at DFDS croseings for May or June 26. Even with their current 15% off for early booking the prices are very high.
As I'm retired I am flexible on crossing dates so tend to go mid week to mid week to avoid the higher weekend sailing costs.
Motorbike costs seem to have rocketed to £170-£190 each way. Thats about double what I paid last Sept.
When you add a cabin and food it was getting on for £600-£700.

Will have a look at P&O Hull. Its further to ride from Scotland but not as bad as aiming for the south coast ports or chunnel.

We use the Hull-Rotterdam crossing a few times a year. Booking meals when booking the crossing works out quite a bit cheaper than paying for them on the boat. We came home on it yesterday and price was around £345.00 for the pickup, two of us, dinner and breakfast for us both on both crossings and a cabin upgrade. This was going and returning mid week.
Quite a bit more expensive than the Chunnel but it saves around 550 miles of motorway slog and an overnight each way.
If one is a member of the camping and caravan club there is a discount which basically covered the cost of meals.

DFDS have always been more expensive than P & O , when we were at work and were involved in security searches at the ferry terminal we used to be able to get a 20% discount (forces discount) and even then it was just slightly cheaper and it was a PITA getting out of Amsterdam in comparison to getting in and out of Zeebrugge .
The discount was dropped a couple of years later and because P & O would often give a 20 or 30% discount if booked early it was considerably cheaper to use them

Just looked at P&O. DFDS Newcastle £650 versus £430 return with P&O for my planned crossing dates.
A bit extra fuel to get to Hull but worth it for the £220 saving.
Must be 20ish years since I've been to Hull for the ferry in the pre-GPS days.

Expensive, overrated and crappy old ships. DFDS is a disgrace IMO
I use the Rotterdam to Hull link if traveling up north. Also a lot easier to get onto the motorway network either side.

Dreadful Ferry. Dreadful Service. That’s what their name is in the “business”
I did the Newhaven-Dieppe a few times during Covid, as I could travel , being classed as an essential shirker.
I thought they were great. Maybe they’ve changed ?
I know they’re not happy in Jersey where DFDS now run the local ferry service whereas we stuck with Condor Ferries, who have now been absorbed into Brittany Ferries

used both. From memory the food was way better on the Hull ferry. Adds an extra 1.5 hours for me, but at that price difference.Hull2-0 Newcastle!

Good point. I am generalising which is not correct. I am referring to the Newcastle service only. These vessels are well over 30 years old and long past their sell by date. Cant comment on their other services I’m afraid.

Like the ferries to Spain, I doubt there is enough traffic to make it worthwhile operating a second service on that route so they get a monopoly and surge pricing.

The Hull route to Europoort is going to be a much heavier freight route so if there aren't many passengers, P&O will stick a load of freight on. Brittany Ferries does the same from Portsmouth as haulage companies just drop trailers of non-urgent stuff to go on the next ferry with capacity.

Of course, as you will know, the DFDS 'early bird' booking discount doesn't apply to Commodore class, which is a bummer...
It is outrageously expensive, but the journey south is outrageously tiresome nowadays...
Hoping this new Rosyth crossing gets going before I'm completely done...it will doubtless be expensive, but so what! Dunkirk is handy for France.

Tries to book commodore class and wants it to be cheap, oh do fuck off

It’s absolute shit I can’t buy a new Aston Martin for 40k

Not sure he wants it to be cheap, but merely have the same early bird discounts as the other cabins.
Sounds fair enough to me .
I got 20% off for being over 60. Shall I fuck off too ? 😘

If you would, that would be great.

Unless you’re doing your morally decent stuff then you can stay. But I don’t want that to be seen as decent, people might think I am ok.

Don’t worry. We’d never think that 😜
