DFDS Vs Superfast Ferries (Again!)

I hate to bring this up again but I reckon this one beggars believe. I've got more than a week's hols still to take and after discussing it with Mrs Ronno, I thought about nipping over to Germany at the end of September for a week and visiting my old Maw and Paw. I thought I'd take the car and take my grandchild (3 year old) with us to give my daughter a wee break from him as he can be a bit of a handfull and also so that he can meet my parents for the first time. September (end of) is also the start of the cheaper fares I decided to try Rosyth so as to spare the wee guy the run down to Newcastle.

I phoned Superfast for a quote. (Their online service kept jamming). Only dates available for that period were early October. Okay says I, how much return for car, cabin, 2 adults and a 3 year old (who goes free AFAIK).

£522. This wasn't including their fuel surcharge either...

A wee bit steep I thought so I went online for the exact same dates and car, cabin etc with DFDS.

£286 That's a bit of a saving, eh???

If I decide to go, I think I know where I'll be sailing from

Most of our trips abroad we end up travelling by DFDS - unless a south coast ferry is required, of course . Anyway I often compare prices just to see if it's even close, so we could justify using it - for a wee change - but it's ALWAYS about double
There's fairly regular discussion in the press and tv these days regarding the Rosyth ferry etc, it's change to every 2nd day, difficult trading etc.. - BUT the more important point about their pricing compared to their nearest rival never seems to get a mention - and at the end of the day that's probably the root cause on their other problems

Anyway, off to Ireland tommorrow at 06:00am - P7O Troon-Larne, £103 return, two people and bike. For a feckin 2 hour crossing, that price doesn't too hot either ?

......Superfast not taking ANY bookings for 2007...whereas DFDS have just accepted our group booking for next summer.....

.....so, daily service reduced to alternate days this year....no service next year...................?

Coincidence that the Scottish Exec subsidy expires 31/12/06........?

I wonder what will happen after 31st December? Surely too much money has been invested to simply close the port and service down. Hopefully another operator with a more realistic price structure will take over.

We found the same last year when we tried to book for this year. Superfast said they could not accept bookings. The reason they gave was that the timetable could not been finalised until the dry-dock dates had been agreed.

In the end it did not matter as they were more than twice what we paid for Hull to Zeebrugge outbound and Ijmuiden to Newcastle homeward.

I don't think this service will last much longer, especially - as Chris pointed out - when the subsidy subsides.

Still, at least the fine folks of Rosyth will get a nice new road out of it - if the road is ever completed...

I can't fault the service. Good food, good accommodation, good pricing.

I've done Britany Ferries and thought it was overpriced and poor catering.

Back to Rosyth - I actually hope it fails and a company that employs British seafarers takes over.

Ive just been quoted £121 return for me and the bike September.
No cabins left though. Only 'comfartable aircraft style seats'

I really like the Rosyth Ferry and for us up here its heaven on the way home. The ride back from Hull is sole destroying because in your mind the holiday is over as soon as you hit Hull Docks.....

Ditto Andy. My westerly location matches your northerly. Getting back from Hull is a pain. So, Rosyth in September for the 2nd time this year. I really hope not the last!

We got booked just last night with DFDS. 2 x bikes, 1 x cabin, me and HWMBO. All this for £286. After hearing all the horror stories about the cost of crossings I will be sure to use them again. Only 7 weeks to go.
Thinking of heading to the ring............is this a wise move??????
