There is a way apparently of activating sensors on an early 650gs twin to show engine temperature, fuel gauge and gear position. Is there a tool for this and the relevant adaptor? As mine has the half covered display. It would be nice to read codes and erase service warnings too.

you may be able to achieve your aims but would need to make sure your display has the capability. I believe there may have been different versions but i am sure someone will advise.
If your display is capable you will need a coding app like Motoscan, a cable to convert the BMW diagnostic plug under the seat from the round one to an OBD11 connector and an OBD11 scanning tool.
