So I reach John o groats and my oil warning icon came on:flag
The sight glass went from full to zero in 700 milles!
Glad I could find a petrol station open in wick that sold oil!
Unipart super plop had to do as I did not take nearly as much with me as I needed!
I presume they are all as thirsty as mine!!

New bike?
Old bike?

:nenau

Boxers DO use oil until they're run in (15-17k miles), subject to how they've been ridden in the first 500 or so.

New bikes burn oil.
Mine did, up until about 10,000 miles or so.
Half a litre per 1000 miles I seem to recall is normal.
It only takes 250ml to go from bottom to top of the oil level glass.

It's a 1 yr old 1200 gs this is my longest run and I was just not expecting it really, I will be more prepaid for next time! I have just had the best ride to date John o groats to Ullapool ! Amazing

Some burn oil some don't - I had to carry oil with my 1150 - my current 1200 doesn't get to the bottom of the sight glass between services - think its luck of the draw.

Its a geman engineering thing!

The last 2 VWs I bought new came with a litre of oil. The first used it all, the present one is still sealed in the bottle after 20k

As for the GS, the first didn't use a drop & the twincam about 1/4 litre in 6k

They all bed in eventually!

As you move nearer the pole the viscosity is thinned and the piston rings contract allowing the bike to use more oil. Thats why its better to have an adventure in the south.

What do you expect, your engine was designed in 1854 and has only had a few updates since then:)

twas that flat out run the lenght of the M6 that did it:D:D

As has been said, don't worry about it, MOST of them do that sir!

My original 07 GS used a little (top to bottom of the sight glass in about 1000 miles) until it reached 6000 miles then after the service, it would only use a noticeable amount if out for a good hard thrash.

On my new DOHC, the oil warning light came on after 500 miles from new and it continues to use a little oil although it has reduced it's consumption now having reached 8000 miles.

Also have to agree with you, Ullapool to Durness and then over to John O'Groats has to be one of the most spectacular rides in the UK.

Another 12 owner who's bike barely uses oil - I think I've only topped it up once prior to a service in 35k :thumb2

Bought a liter of oil 6 years ago when I first picked up my GSA, take it with me every year I go touring, and yet at 46K I have still to break the seal - :nenau

My 2008 GSA went from Fareham to John O'Groats and back without using any oil, and was 'well ridden' (just making progress officer, honest).

They do settle down with age once the piston rings bed in at around the 10k mark.

Good job you got to Wick, the Tesco there comes in handy.:augie

I bumped into our newest adventure rider today, he seems to be enjoying himself, I wasnt allowed to ride with them!!!

Pleased to hear it chap - that he's enjoying it, not that you're being excluded! ;)
