Diesel and boxers don't work!....

The first week after getting my P & J, thought I'd treat it to super unleaded - it was a little poppy, did'nt realise that's the way they are. Anyway, tonight chucked in 15 lts of the fine ultimate diesel. What a diddy! :bash :bash Got 50 yds and stopped.

Managed to syphon off 12 lts and filled up with good old 95 but it won't go. Now the battery's done. QUESTION - Have I done any serious damage? Any suggestions what I can do? Am i the only numpty out there? HELP:blast

No, I filled up my new shiny BMW 530D Traffic car with 60L of finest unleaded a few months ago.:blast

Drain the tank, give it a swill out with fresh unleaded and re-fill with PETROL not spry crisp'n'dry. If you've only done a few yards it should be reasonably unharmed. I don't profess to be an expert and there are far cleverer folks around who will tell you if I' m pointing you in the wrong direction.

If that does not do the job I suppose you may have affected the lambda sensor, not sure if they can be cleaned or need to be replaced. Give Steptoe a PM if that's looking likely, what he doesn't know you can write on the back of a stamp.

You have to get the remaining 100% diesel out of the fuel lines. Plugs may be fouled, you might get by just cleaning them.

There shouldn't be any damage, it is going to smoke a bit with 2 ltr still in the tank - I wouldn't run it too hard once you get it started.

Don't feel too bad we had a guy on a week long trip do this twice!

get a big battery booster and keep winding it over with fresh fuel in it till it starts.
 
You will be OK - diesel in a petrol motor does not do any long term damage. It is in fact possible for the motor to run, albeit with a severe case of pre-ignition. Modern motors however detect this pre-ignition via the knock sensors and shut the motor down.

Petrol in a diesel however does do damage. The fuel injection system (pump) on a diesel is lubricated with diesel - if you put petrol in it removes the lubrication.
 
In case you havent yet realised, look at the colour of the hose at the pump. Diesel is always black, petrol is always green.
 
I thought I would be safe with that theory but was outta luck in Russia, there wasn't a green pump to be seen. Lots of yellow and red.

The bike still started though so I guess it wasnt diesel:)
 
On holiday one guy put a tank full of diesel in his R1100RT and did about 50 miles before stopping , draining the tank and refilling with petrol. No long term damage, apart from his pride;)
 
Thanks for your advice people - clean our fuel lines, de-gunge plugs, turn it over till it fires up, take it easy and finaly and most importnatlly, get some glasses you colour blind numpty! :thumb2

No it's not :)

There are quite a few garages around where they have Yellow for diesel and red and green for the different types of petrol....when I used to work for the AA there was a petrol station in South Norwood that was renowned for it....we'd get called out to its locality every day for cars not starting or running and it was always diesel into petrol.

A couple of my patrols had a lot free diesel out of that one :)

PS Ask Whatton why he doesn't get off his arse and make it a standardised colour system...he's to blame ya know ;)

that used to be the case, but since 1995 the oil content of Diesel has fallen to almost nothing:( that's why pre '95 transits, Peugeots and Citroens suffer bearing failures which scrap the pumps [bearings seize and turn in housings fecking whole casings:( ] New pumps [ceramic bearings] and HDI engines need less lubrication..
If you do put petrol in a diesel car nowadays, best and CHEAPEST cure is to put a Litre of Cheapest engine oil per 40 litres of Petrol and as soon as you get down to half a tank, re-top it up with diesel { or cooking oil:rolleyes: } repeat twice and Roberts your Mothers Uncle..
Had to do it several times whilst travelling Europe during Diesel fuel { 70's and 80's } shortages..
MAN and VOLVO Trucks, done countless thousands of miles after such remedies, and Trucks [ and mates Rover 800 ] were still OK :thumb2

My numpty mate filled his GSXR1100 with gazoil while we were in France.
His excuse was he didn't speak French!
He only realised he was filling up with diesel when the garage owner came out waving his arms & shouting at him.
Luckilly his GSXR's tank was very easy to remove & he got most of it out, (leaving most of it on the forecourt floor:confused: ). A quick blast & a bit of smoke later & it was fine.
 
John Armstrong - Good point re BP special diesel pumps. That's exactly what happened - the B***ARDS have the pump head as green/white but the hose black. I noticed that this morning when filling up my car and now you mention it, I'm still a complete numpty but feel a tiny bit better. Watch out!:rob
