Hi
When using a router are the laptops that are connected via router have the same address as the PC.
Just thinking of security for my young daughter in the house/bedroom etc.

Each individual computer has a different internally facing IP address but this is not seen externally, only the external IP address can be seen by those outside and its unlikely yours will be the same each time you use it (unless you have ordered and paid for a static IP address).

Built-in Parent Controls in the router or Windaz is an oft overlooked thing for family computers and if they are going to be using one out of your regular gaze consider installing Cyber Patrol to control their on-line time and where they are visiting.

The amount of times I hear people say that Facebook/Bebo/MySpace/MSN Messenger is a collaboration tool for school home/project work :augie

My daughter (aged 9) has a PC in here bedroom but I know how to lock it down and set it up for safe usage, most people just put a pc in their child's room and forget about it and them, if you don't know how to set up a pc for safe children's use then keep their computers in communal areas and closely supervise their activity.

Dim question from me again ....

Going to buy Euan a laptop at the weekend. I have a BT wireless router, if I fire his up straight from the box (Vista home premium) will Ihave to load the BT disk (if I can find it) on the new laptop or will it just find the connection?

Trippy - I think it makes the job easier if you do...but can't remember how I did my daughter's laptop with the BT thing.

If you can't find the install CD, let me know and I'll post you a spare one I have here.

In a word, no.

When you fire up the new (already fecked before you open the box) Vista laptop and enable any wireless hardware switch (either a button or a switch somewhere around the laptop, sides or front usually), or a function key combination (look for an aerial symbol in a different colour on your 'F' keys at the top of the keyboard).

Whn you've done this a symbol should appear bottom right of screen saying wireless networks have been found, click on it, find your router from the list of available routers, click connect and when prompted insert your passphrase, if you haven't changed it both the SSID (the name of your router) and passphrase are on a label on the underside of your router.

Put the BT openwoe disk in at your peril :D
