This evening riding home, my GS1200 (with 12k miles) acted totally out of character! Coming to a set of lights, I geared down but could not get it into 1st (the gear lever could only be described as feeling very spongy). I pulled away in 2nd. A mile or so on, again coming to a set of lights, I was stuck in 3rd and could not get down to 2nd or 1st. So had to pull off in 3rd. The final stretch home was on the A3 where I got up to 6th and coming off the A3, the gears seemed to be ok (no problem selecting 1st when I got home). Has anyone else ever had this problem or a possible diagnosis?

I had a similar intermittent problem on mine but at around 400-500 miles. Since the 600 mile service it's been fine. Has yours just had the 12k service or is it due? If it's due you may find that an oil change will sort the problem, but I'd mention it to the dealer anyway.

I had exactly this problem, and worse, some time ago. I was stuck in 4/5/6 gears in rush hour on M25. Nightmare.

Turned out that a bit of WD40 was all that was needed on the gear lever pivot bush to solve the immediate problem, as diagnosed by the nice man from BMW assist in the rare occasions they sent someone out who knows about fixing things.

This bush was then subsequently changed under warranty.

Am told it is a known problem on the GS...

So, keep your bush well lube'd.

Yes, fairly similar to as you describe on 12GS no1. in late 2004 with about 100 ish miles on the clock.

Followed by recovery to have a new 'box and clutch not made of bottletops

Mine .....

...decided that 3rd gear would be a nice place to stop and not move from..............bugger - bugger, anyway a new gearbox solved that little problem. :bounce1

Had the GS in to the dealer yesterday, but they could not replicate the problem. I think I will have to let the BMW recovery service come and get the bike when it happens again to prove that I am not imagining things!

No unfortunately it has turned out to be a gearbox failure. Fortunately still covered by the guarantee. Having a new gearbox fitted in a month's time!

No. They said that anything that I damage further at this stage will be replaced anyway!

what happens if the gearbox locks up when your riding will BMW loan you a bike then when its to late????
