I have just got my hands on a Olympus C-5050z and I can say with truth, that the pic's are really quite good, and the things it can do for a small cam are mind blowing. I current own a Cannon EOS 5 and EOS 3 along with all the trick gear and have been taking photo's for the last 5 years. But this little digital cam holds it own, that's for sure.
It's not on the cheap side mind you (£550), but one of the big advantages is that it takes a whole host of memory chips including the IBM dive (512MB to 3GIG), and it also takes AA bat's or recharge job's. And it comes with the recharge jobes (1500mA). And the light meter is bang on target, I tried it just hours ago in low lighting, trying to pick up the sun set, with no flash, no tripodm, just holding the cam in hands, and the shoots were great.
I don't want to confuse the issue, but for a little more brass, you can get quite a few extra's and at 5.0 megapixel you can't go wrong. All most forgot, the Macro setting on this cam, can do things that I've seen done before, with a Zoom lens.
