Are these ok for TBS? or do you need a twinmax?

I can pick up a digital one for about £30 or so..

Anything is better than nothing I guess. Quite a few people use the Morgan carbtune, similar price but does up to four cylinder engines so a bit more flexibility. I've got an old set of Davida dials but want to upgrade. There are three twins in the garage and a four cylinder so the carbtune will probably be the way I go.

On a side note, when you balance them all the instructions say to park the stepper motors. When mine was done by the local BMW garage they didn't. He balanced it around 4000 rpm which is out of range of the steppers which I believe deal with tick over. Hopefully one of the knowledgeable people can answer this.

Which bit of West Sussex are you in, just out of nosiness!

Throw the twin max away - you need a Harmoniser, if you can obtain one.

I have an electronic carb balancing widget. Did the job and allowed me to ride the bike with it connected.

Tried to get a Harmonizer last year but no joy so bought a carbtune.
Easy to use and does what it says on the box.

what's so bad about the TwinMax?

That's the one I have. It worked fine for me.

Set it to low sensitivity and zero the dial. Connect to bike and start the engine adjust until it's at zero then increase sensitivity to fine tune the balance.

I did mine without the idle steppers connected. They self park when ignition is off.
Unplug steppers.
Hold throttle slightly open and hit the starter
Engine won't run below 1500 rpm so it's a bit of an art.
Once it's running you can get an accurate throttle balance. I did mine at 2000 rpm to avoid upsetting neighbours.
If the balance goes off at tickover with steppers reconnected you probably have one sticking.
