i've no interest in paying a monthly subscription to a multi billion £ media corporation so,

do i need two set top boxes: saorview for ireland and freeview for the uk?

or is there an alternative?

i don't watch much tv and i'm happy enough with what i currently get via analogue but after the digital switchover i'll be left with nothing if i don't do something before then. :nenau

thanx for taking the time.

Hmm, I sit on the OFCOM Advisory Committee for NI. From what I remember from our meetings.. both governments signed a memorandum of understanding on digital television back in 2010. Basically there will be a new NI multiplex which will carry TG4, RTE1 & RTE2. Our 'Freeview HD' accredited boxes will receive these channels.

Here's is Mr Hunt talking about it in parliament and here is a link explaining the technical stuff in more detail.

My advice.... buy a Freeview HD box!

is yout TV MPEG4 compatiable. if so you only need the free to air box for uk channels.

if its not you can either buy 2 boxes or 1 box with both unit built in.

most fo the combi boxes are bit more expensive but only have 1 remote and usually get a recoring feature allowing you to record yoru shows.

my TV is mpeg4 ready so i only have the sky free to air box and get all rte and uk channels

You are basically correct . Your options for "free tv" are freesat for uk channels and saorview "freeview" for rte digital . These can be achieved by
1. a freesat + freeview mpeg4 tv
2. a combo freesat + mpeg4 freeview box.
3. a new mpeg4 tv and a freesat hd box
4. a freesat "box" and an mpeg4 freeview (saorview) "box"

this will work now.

I live in Newry

So....... can we in Dublin get UK digital signals ?
and have always had all 9 tv channels available on Analogue TV.
Before we bought a digital set, I looked up what was coming in the south, & bought Samsung because it had MPEG4 in it as standard.
With nothing but the original ariel, I can get all 9 terrestrial stations in digital, plus dozens of digital only stations.
