hi,just installed my 3rd set of rear pads in my 56reg gs in 11k miles!, its got the servo brakes :blast front pads dont even look 1/2 worn-does any one know if its possible to alter the bias to the rear?
1st 2 pairs were genuine, have now fitted ebc`s in desperation-apart from this annoying quirk im still pleased with the bike & its been no trouble.
:thumb2

Hello. The wear on the rear pads is a well known problem on the GS. A few weeks ago I had to change mine and was told by my local dealer that BMW now had an upgrade of hardened rear pads for the bike. That sounded like a good idea, so I said I would try them. Should have asked about the price first though as I was charged just under £50 for them!!
Other than making sure that the pads slide on the piston smoothly, try an advanced riding course and then you will never need to brake again.:)

The 08 model has the new pads as standard and they last a lot longer. mine has just been in for it's 24,000 service and the pads were still o.k.
They may be more expensive, but if they struggle to last between services, as on my old 06 model who cares. :nenau

pads wearing faster than bar of soap!

24k and still original rear pads? would like to know if thats entirely down to the new compound pads or if bmw have adjusted the front/rear bias.
as for an advanced riding course,i dont think they could teach me anything :bounce1

17000 on mine and there's still loads of life in them.

I bet you're getting through a set of tyres every 5000 miles too???

Just had first Mot, alas failed because one of the rear brake pads the sintered material had come away from the back plate. This was annoying as there was still plenty of lining left. I would estimate they were only half worn at 10500 mls.

pads like soap

hi,still on original tyres after 11k,as for advanced training not teaching me anything,well-tongue in cheek springs to mind
the fact my front pads are in such good nick also tells me i do not brake excessively hard-dont usually blow my own trumpet but i would say im a very smooth rider. ;)

Just like you I had mine in for new pads (lasted for 10K:thumb2) , and were offered the new hardened ones. I was told by the dealer that they probably would wear down the rear dics earlier.:ymca I went for the origianl ones again:bounce1 Hope they will also last for 10K.

I have just had the rear disk replaced at 30,000 miles, worn to its limit.

Seems to be a problem with the servo brake setup - I used to get through a new set of rear every 4k on my 04. I'm at 7k on my 07 (non-servo) and there's not the same problem. The real pisser though is the disc down to minimum wear less than 20k.

It must also be down to riding style, i have an '04 servo with 13000 miles still on original pads, maybe half worn.

Possibly, my 04 did the majority of its miles in the M25..........the ADV has a better life!!!

Just on 30k and my disc need replacing also - looking at EBC combo.
New back pads - 5 sets total - ebc lasting longer than the originals, but only just.
And no, my dealer did not offer me any "new" pads at the service last week.
Fronts have been replaced once, still plenty of life in them, so like others I suspect some F/R imbalance.

That sounds like a dealer response:tosser

My rear lasted less than 2k with no wear to the front and no use of the rear pedal. That ain't down to riding style thats down to something wrong with to much rear bias. Think it was down to when you first ride the bike it gives max bias to the rear until it knows how much it needs, don't know if something was stuck on mine but after fitting new pads it seems to have sorted itself out.:nenau
