Disaster?

Screen just locked up and would not respond at all, turned it off and restarted, nothing. Came up with "no boot up disc detected or disk failed". Computer an HP, running windows 8 about 13 months old, can't remember how long the warranty is but anyone any ideas?. Many thanks for any info.

If it's out of warranty and the "give it a thump and try again" doesn't work, I'd be fitting a replacement hard drive and installing a Linux of some flavour.

Actually, if the "give it a thump..." doesn't work I'd be booting Linux from a DVD or USB stick and having a poke around to see if the hard drive has gone missing or is corrupted.

Laptop or desktop? I'm guessing you don't have Windows install media, hence the Linux suggestion, otherwise could fit a new drive and reinstall Windows.

What's more important, getting the machine back running or saving data on the hard drive?

Many thanks, it has started working on it's own!! looks like the threat of a thump worked (for now), only 13 months old my old Dell ,about 7 years old and still going strong!

the thump is for sticking read heads or loose connections.
