Disc lock

One that doesn't get your bike stolen is as good a bet as any*.

I keep a pound of butter in the fridge to keep elephants away. It works :thumb2

*Attach disc lock. Walk off. Thief lifts bike into van or takes off the front wheel. It really is that easy. Chain the bike to something if you really want to push them towards another bike in the same bay as yours.

Pay your insurance and forget disc locks. They are an accident waiting to happen :hide

.........said a voice of experience by the sounds of it:D

I don't bother with chains or disc locks as I will forget they are there and attempt a fast getaway.........:blast

Just get a disc lock reminder if you're a forgetful doofus!

I swore by the Xena Disc Alarm Lock but I've had 2 now but I'm not sure I would buy another. The alarm module is too temperMENTAL: a little bit of rain one day, and I couldn't shut the bloody thing up. Be sure to get one that fits your brake disc - the pins come in different diameters.

This version has the inaccessible alarm unit when locked on your disc.

This version is flawed in that you can easily pop the alarm unit out with a screwdriver

However, I would rather have one than not, if only to discourage the scrote from stealing mine and to persuade the cretin to take the bike next to mine instead.

AVOID these brink locks - see how this kid picked it in about 15 seconds

AVOID these locks with that Kryptonite type 7-pin lock - see how many of these can be opened just with a Bic pen

I use disc lock in combo with chain just like to know which is best:pullface

Probably the ones you already own, as you have not lost your bike.

See the thread from the bod who had his bike nicked from Terminal 5 at Thiefrow.

Super dooper U-lock, sawn through. Even more super dooper chain, through the rear wheel, apparently not chained to anything, nicked with the bike.

Super dooper disk lock on bike? Smash the disk with a lump hammer..... These bods have little or no pride in their workmanship, after all.

if you look at mag tests in Ride and the like, even the best and pricey disc locks barely score near 50% of full marks

at best they delay and maybe put the casual thief off

i did notice this year that Ebiker gave me a bit off the insurance for having a Hardcore chain and stating that I chained the bike up at night, so I guess the best advice is chain it to something solid and use Sold Secure or Thatcham type approved or similar chains, you may even get a bit off the insurance?

50% of full marks? Who in publishing makes this drivel up?

In a scientific test (they are always scientific) our expert (always an unamed but reformed lag of some description, or a dull bod with a white coat, a clip board and a diploma in boring from the City of Aston University) opened this lock in 10 minutes. That is very good, so we give it 6/10.

In an unscientific test, Spider (not 'is real name, mate) on day release from borstal and Sean from the pub, lifted the bike up and into a van in under a minute. No science, no laboratory, just brawn and better employment of brains. :D

I'm always wary of accepting tiny insurance discounts on the basis of mandatory security. My (perhaps unwarranted) concern being that it could be used against me if I was daft enough to forget to lock it up and get it nicked. Probably paranoia but I prefer to give insurance companies minimum wiggle room...

Speaking of which - Last time we renewed the house insurance I got the usual questions on the phone about house alarms etc but this time said 'no' to the alarm question (SWMBO's mother always forgets to arm the bloody thing when she's house sitting). I asked if this would put the premium up and the girl replied that there's no discount for having an alarm...

Which begs the question why do they want to know in the first place?

Don't forget to use the reminder.

If you're going to chain your bike to something immovable don't use the bikes wheel.

Wheels are very easily undone and the rest of the bike can then be carried away. :D

i use the motrax ones when out and about as they fit front and rear, just a deterent though as if they really want it they will have it :(

cheers
