Hi, all

I am a new member, I expect to get a new r1200 GS soon:bounce1 I will be fitting the BMW panniers and look forward to some touring in the spring and summer.

Can anyone recomend a good disc lock, or security device. I would prefer one with a chain and with the padlock doubling as a disc lock.

2nd vote for Almax Chains and locks. I think they may be out of squire locks but have alternatives. Also would consider the 1.5m if your going to attach to a ground anchor or larger lampost. They're local to me and very helpful. the advice offered indicates a lot of disk locks arent the best to use on chains as they are more exposed when not on a disk. They also pointed out that the shackle cover on my disk lock ,a very "reputable" "A" brand, was diecast and only a cosmetic visual deterrent to bolt croppers... :eek

PS stick with the III if you plan on carrying the chain on a bike as the IV would anchor a tanker.. great for a garage/static use though

It's my view that disc locks are a tip-over just waiting to happen. (For me anyway).

My single remaining functioning braincell would just forget that I've fitted one, or the little yellow tag thing would blow away, and I'd end up on my backside.

So, I use a long 10mm thick cable thingy with a good padlock.

1) It's a visible deterent

2) I pass it through the back wheel and padlock it over the driver's seat so I can't drive off without sitting on it - which would bring it to my attention if I forgot.

3) It's nowhere near the ground so Johnny Scrote can't take a swing at it with an axe or similar.

I guess if the professionals want the bike then it's going to go. Period. So my deterrents are aimed at the lower level and/or opportunistic scrotes. :nenau

You only do it once ( I did ) :blast

Simple solution, take plastic cable / zip tie, make a loop and cut off and leave a " tail " of a couple of inches ( I cut mine to a point ) You can push the shackle through the loop when off the bike . Obviously you will see the loop when you come to fit the lock to the disk which you the push the tail into your ignition barrel !!

Come back to bike .. cant put key in the lock and make an arse of youself outside a full Mc d's when you forget the lock ,:thumb

Job done ,

Cheers,

My Kryptonite New York Disk Lock came with a carry pouch which has a velcro flap. Originally I thought that this was useless and when not in use the lock was fixed around the left rider footrest mounting bracket.

Unfortunately this led to the lock getting full of crud so I excavated the carry pouch and now velcro it around the handlebar brace when not in use.

When the lock is fitted to the disc the toungue of the pouch fits between the handlebar mounting lugs, under the bars themselves and the body of the pouch covers the keyhole. Two benefits here, one it prods my recalcitrant memory into recalling that I fitted the disk lock and two it keeps the rain off the lock itself:)

One day of course some low life will steal the pouch and stand back for a laugh when I try and ride away with the lock in the disk!:nenau

Almax plus squire lock is *the* one to go for. When I use the HP2 I have a Xena disk lock on the front as well with built in alarm, not sure if it is any good though. A good tip is always drive into a parking space, that way the fastest you will ever be going with a lock on is very slow walking pace backwards.

DAMHIKIJK OK?

For the Adventure - ermm, nothing when at work, just keep it full of fuel and steering lock on. Actually I need not worry about locks on either of them at work because the feckin estate agents are always blocking me in anyway :spitfire

Thanks for the advice, guys. I will be ordering a Almax 3 with the Squire lock.

Gone off the disc lock idea, I am also guaranteed to forget about it, the big chain is also a much better visual deterent

Good advice about wraping it round the seat, even I should notice that!

No! does not compute.

Come on Ovenpaa, if on the HP2 ride over them, if on the adventure ride through them.:D
very good point, but I get loads of fun pointing at the illegally parked car to the parking guys who then issue tickets, best to do it when the estate agents are watching, then see how quickly they can get out of the office...

Did I say I don't like estate agents?

DAMHIKIJK - Don't ask me how I know, I just know

When you order tell them you are a member of Visordown and they should give you some discount, I got a free lock bag that clips to straps under the seat, Motrax I think it was and supposed to be worth 25 quid.

Now in an ideal world the Almax chain would fit through the hole in the back wheel hub and swing arm but it does not...

I went for the Thatcham approved Abus lock on Nippy Normans site, fits neatly under the seat as well.

Where do you stop with security is the thing, I can't eb arsed to carry around 3 Te of metal links to secure the bike with, if they want it badly enough they'll get it anyway?
