Since fitting a "spare" front wheel which I bought 2nd hand, I found I have been getting a knocking sound when braking which speeds up & slows down with road speed. I found that there is play in the left disc in particular and reckon this must be the cause of the knocking. I only notice it at slower speeds. Do you think it only moves at lower speeds and at higher speeds the wheel's rotating too quickly for the disc to move back and forth?

I'm about to go off on holiday on the bike and wondered if this could be a problem or if I could just ignore it. Would a set of 5 new washers help? Or is it possible to fit 2 on each one? I've found other threads on this but no suggestions about what to do or if there is anything to be concerned about.

I can't put the original wheel back on as it is with a wheel builder.

The bike's an '03 1150 with A.B.S..

Thanks

iv seen a lot of loose discs on japs, but never with a knocking sound, it must be a lot of play then?

Discs

Personally i'd replace all of the disc washers, cheap to do and hope that it eliminates the play, it's not worth the risk considering most of your braking is done on the front. Are the disc's straight as well,ie not warped?

It's the studs on the wheel hub that the disc mount onto getting worn.Do a search and all will be revealed,no need to replace anything.

Did a search as you suggested, Vern. Still didn't find a solution.

I loosened all the bolts and tightened them up again. I've taken the bike for a run and it didn't seem to be doing it. I imagine it might do it again at some point, though.

Hi there, If you pm geo28 he will tell you the fix for it. He has a 2001 y reg r1150 gs. He had the washers replaced in edinburgh bmw dealer. got back to glasgow 45 miles and the wheel was back to knocking well the brake disc was. He has it fixed now. I am sure he will give you all the info you need.

hi , i had the same problem and this is the advice i was given.

The problem i was having is the alloy hub wears with the disc getting pushed onto them and causes the wavey washers to brake hence the rattle ( i changed them and they broke again within 200 miles. i was told to fit the hub shimms from the 1200 gs which stops the hub wearing and the put new wavey washers in, and this will resolve the problem , ive not been out on the bike since this was done so cant comment on the results but have no reason to doubt the bmw mechanic that told me.

hope this helps.

my 2p worth...

I had the same knocking noise on my front wheel 2 years ago....I bought the washers to replace it with, took them on an 11 month tour to Vietnam and the noise went away.

Last week the noise came back.....and I cant find the washers now..fecking typical.

BUT I do remember some talk here about "filing down" or doing something with the mount for the disc. I'm going have a wee search here and will report back when I find the article...I think someone has mentioned it here.

I have this problem by the looks of it.

Any more info on the solution?

Looks like new spring washers is the short term solution but may just be hiding a underlying issue? Any feedback appreciated. TIA!!

I would suggest that it might be the bobbins that are worn as well as the springs. You can get all the individual parts or a complete kit, (£17.50 a side, for early 1150's), from Motorworks.
