Dismantle Fuel Cap Lock

Hi all,
I had an indecent the other day where I could not get my fuel tank cap to unlock at the petrol station.
After much faffing about it reluctantly opened, much to my relief.
squirted a small amount of 3 in 1 at it before giving it a proper key in out and twist until it felt a little freed up.
Filled up, locked up and away i went.

Took it apart today and it is a bit of a mess.
The lock plates seem to be corroded in to the barrel, I have got a couple moving but can not get them out the same way when I serviced my pannier lock after some kind soul tried to use something other than a key to get it off the bike.

Are these lock plates held in differently to the panniers or just stuck

Any clever, smart suggestions greatly appreciated

OK, got them all out but the lock barrel is knackered, looks like it has been at the bottom of the sea for some considerable time.
Of to NOG in the morning to order new one.

Had the same happen to me the other day, not a nice feeling when I was on fumes and not near home...

It did open eventually and when home I used brake cleaner, then white grease... it seems lovely and sooth now but I've since heard that lock oil might have been a better idea

You ride in Britain. The roads are salted. Any water that collects in the lock can only evaporate so the salt builds up. A good high electrolyte grease is probably the best option.
 
Thanks all, I have a new lock barrel coming early next week.
For the time being it is reassembled without wafers just so the bike can still be ridden
Will now look for high electrolyte grease

Don’t go mad with grease. Some silicone grease should be fine inside the lock then add the barrel.
BTW never use grease or oil in the ignition lock as it can clog the wafers.
It’s a balance between protection and risk of clogging the lock.
