DIY Servicing : the do's & don'ts

I do oil and filter changes, and I'm quite happy changing brake pads. It's all fairly simple.

Years ago I used to everything my bikes needed. It's only by trying things you find out how to do them (apart from doing some formal training). I've never had any problems. The key is to do things slowly, methodically and carefully and accept that while you won't be as quick as a professional, you'll at least know it's been done properly. That's why I do what i can now.

For tricky stuff - and I would include changing the brake fluid in this - I pay someone I trust to do it. Not a main dealer any more, but someone who I feel confident that he knows what he's doing.

Hey Robin...thanks for your thoughts. It was this kind of input I was looking for. It seems on the whole the thread has focused on the brake fluid and it is bringing some to the . I appreciate all the other responses also. None of the work is brain surgery and lets face it the professional spanner jockeys are not required to earn their PhD in motorcycle maintenance. (no offense)
In opening this thread I was interested to know from those who have worked on the GS, what can be done easily, what can be done with some thought and effort (and help e.g. Haynes / DVD / advice etc) and what should be left alone , period. Of course this presupposes a modicum of spanner know how. Take it as read.
