Do 2015 bikes have a less clattery engine than my 2013 ?

This aspect of the LC is the only thing that has niggled since I bought a 1000 mile old one from the local dealer in Oct 2013. The "cackle" as I named it was evident from the start and in spite of visits to two dealers and comments from others, the source has never been identified (or admitted). Some dealers reported that "engine noise" was often mentioned when test riders returned a bike. I have become resigned to this characteristic and now use ACS moulded ear plugs to make the ownership of my first BMW since I had an R100RS in the late seventies, enjoyable.
So many suggestions have been put forward as to the source, but mostly by people who feel they must answer a question. I have heard "It's the clutch now that it's at the front". "It's the automatic decompressor" (Was it designed to rattle during normal running as surely a "rattle" means something is hitting something).
Going back to the original Post: Are the current bikes quieter? If so what has been changed? Do test rides produce no negative observations as to noise? Have you had a test ride recently? If they are quieter, it must mean the source has been found. What was it please!!!!
Incidently mrtee43, Where are you "in the North" ?
We could compare "rattle".

Just over the hill from you !

yes the bikes rattle! recon its the decompression mech myself?? my 2014 & replacement 2015(late) engine / gearbox are as bad as each other though the heavier crank (latter) is better to me ref smoothness I'm over in Saddleworth where are you northern guys based?

My guess, yes they're all like it.... Had an f800gt before the gs and it rattled.Injectors, clutch and pinking from a lean burn for emissions is my guess at the culprits...... It's that little something extra BMW give you for free at purchase.

2013-2015 no different ..2013 feels quicker but both sound like a bag of shite. etymotic in-ear monitors and all is good

2014 updated one and my first GS. Surprised me how mechanically noisy the engine is.

Does it sound as clattery on the RT? With the additional fairing to smoother the noise somewhat?

I'm reassured by the response to date and will value my ear-plugs as before. We must accept the official line"they all do it". I'd still like to know the source though.

Boxers are clattery. Buy earplugs.

They don't have to be though. Does anybody remember the boxer engine in the Alfasud ? Ok. it was a 4 cylinder but it was as sweet as a sewing machine.

This is not a rant by the way, it's just that if you have an ounce of mechanical sympathy, the sound of a hot GS WC at idle is a bit alarming.

Way back in my past I owned Alfasud Sprint 1.5, it had cam belts and single overhead cams on both heads. This design was always going to be quieter than a chain & gear driven double overhead cam design.
