The subject line says it all, really.

After selling my '13 R1200GS LC two years ago, I replaced it with a '15 GS yesterday.
Due to my current work circumstances, I'm looking at using this bike for a 900 Km round trip to the office three or four times a year.
That means I need panniers.

I don't want to pay for new Vario panniers, but have seen a few local listings for what look like R1200RT LC or K1600 panniers at decent prices.
Hence the subject line: does anyone know if any other BMW panniers will fit the standard GS pannier mounts - or can easily be made to fit?

Thanks for any help on this, guys!

Have a look on the SHAD website they do some nice stuff a sensible prices ,
🤔👍
CS, thanks for the suggestion. (y) I'm not really in the market for anything brand new - I prefer to be frugal if I can.
I know there are bargains to be had... just got to look for them.

I have a GS 1250 and a RS1250. And varios on the GS. The RS, I bought the oem pannier set when new. These two are completely different it seems and would not interchange. That much I can say.....
With the GS, I thought it might be neat to have top loading AL bags on it. It came with varios and an AL top box just big enough for a helmet. But I decided to learn to love the varios as the cost of top loading AL bags is prohibitive for a used bike imo. Unless you can find a deal. The top loading bags have to have a elaborate frame set up that bolts on. All the parts are spendy, with different brands having their own frames. And what I found here in the colonies is people still want almost new prices for them if you can find them. still looking. The varios use the frame rail and a little spur off of the pillion foot peg mount. This saves a ton of weight over the fancy top loading bags with big steel frames.
The most frugal thing for you is probably to find a used set of varios and save a ton of weight too .... imo. Also it would be good to check some other bikes at say the dealer and see if yours can accept the varios, or if it was ordered with the rack and vario mounts. Others may be more helpful and experienced in this regard .....

Amen. On every count.

For £21.64 buy a waterproof bag that you can attach to your back seat and rack. It’s 50 litres (y)

I had a look at Louis' options, and they gave me a couple of good ideas.
Buying from UK, EU and American retailers is tricky, here in SA. Shipping costs and import duties would be laughable, if they were actually funny.
But I'm shifting my focus, and thinking: Why not soft luggage - especially in plasticized canvas? It's lighter, absorbs knocks better, I can overstuff it if I need to, and if I buy smart, I don't need fancy mounting solutions for it.

Hi Nick. Not sure if you're sorted yet, but I've just put a complete set of BMW vario panniers for sale on this forum. Used but in good condition and fully working order, complete with 2 keys, so no need for any re-keying. Fit R1200GS WC and R1250GS models. Only £300 for the full set. To be collected from Tunbridge Wells, or posted at cost, or delivery/meet within 150 miles can be arranged. Take a look under the For Sale section.

Bit of a trek for him to collect though 🤔

Fit a set of pannier rails from the Adventure and you have a lot more choice.
