I've just received a 1GB CF card from Crucial Memory and a note supplied with it says that it needs to be formatted.

It states that if the card is not formatted it may appear to be OK but may suddenly fail.

I cannot remember hearing or reading anything of this in the past and cannot find any mention of it in my Garmin user guide.

I'm trying out the card now.

Has anyone heard of this formatting issue before or are Crucial just covering their arses as these cards can be used in loads of devices.

I've used all my CF cards 'straight out of the box' for both my camera and Nav II. I've had no issues with either...

Mike,

Cheers mate, that was nice and quick.

I am using Crucial cards in my cameras & GPS. I did format it before using it in the Garmin, but only because I had previously used it in my Canon camera. Probably didn't need to, but it doesn't hurt.

But how do you format it?

I cannot see anywhere how you do this.

I actually formatted it in my camera prior to using it in my 2610. I also have a card reader, and I could format it from there, just the same way as a floppy disc. If you have neither, I'm sure it will be fine - it's under guarantee anyway :D
I think I'll order the 1GB on Monday, as the price has come down again, you can now get a 1GB for less than I paid for a 512 MB less than a year ago!

I paid less than £50 from Crucial Memory for mine, postage was free too.

Cheers.
