Hi all,

Simple question for you all...

Just ordered an autocom so i can play ipod, and will be purchasing a GPS at somepoint... :D

Ahhh so many toys, so little money... :eek:

anyway, at some point I alo fancy adding some additional lighting (will go down the Wassal route)

So, as i am about to delve into the delights of wiring things into the GS (1200 and 05 model)

  1. Should I fit the autocom direct to back of aux power as autocom suggest... :nenau
  2. Should I go the whole hog and fit an additional fuse box off the Aux power which will then let me plug autocom and GPS into this and at a later date, I can use it for the lights as well? :nenau
  3. Do I fit an aux power thing up front (near the dash) and use this for the GPS and the lights and does this need to be fused :nenau

If so, which fuse box is the one to go for...

Simplicity is often best.

I run all the above (and more) without an additional fuse box. It was very easy, neat and saved not only money but worrying about whether to leave the fuse box permanently live (which it will be if powered directly from the battery) or run via a switched relay.

(1) The Autocom and a Kenwood radio are both powered by a lead soldered to the back of the auxiliary socket beneath the seat.

(2) HID (installed by Les :thumb2) run from the regular lighting circuit.

(3) My Zumo is powered from the dedicated socket hidden away behind the headstock. It's there on all 1200's from new, so you might as well use it or it sits around doing nothing.

(4) I have a second auxiliary socket (a BuMW option) up on the near side beak. This I use to power a heated waistcoat. It's a Widder, the heating control for which I velcro to the near side of the petrol tank. I can also use the same socket to power a phone / camera charger / Ipod etc. For these I use an iGo http://www.igo.com/ but you can of course use a conventional car cigarette lighter charger if you like.

(5) I rarely, if ever, actually plug anything into the auxiliary socket under the seat but I can do if I need to.

(6) I charge the bike using an Optimate. I use the fused Optimate flying lead, connected straight to the battery.

I can't think of much else I need to power, so the need for a separate fuse box is not really there.

An additional fuse box wired to the bike does make things easier and IMPO neater when it comes to wiring but it should not be connected to the aux power socket directly as the can bus system would not allow it to draw sufficient power without shutting down.

An auxiliary fuse box should take it's power directly from the battery and you are then faced with a choice of having it live all the time (simplest connection) or switched through a suitable relay so it is only live when the key is turned on.

Owing to limited space under the 1200 seat I'd go with the Centach box as it can be mounted close to the battery on the back of the airbox, it's best to minimise the length of live wiring direct from the battery when possible for reasons of safety.

Went down this route as it made more sense (and couldn't be bothered to wait for the delivery of an extra fuse thingy)

All installed... now need to find the GPS socket so I know where it is...

it goes off a few minutes after the ignition is switched off.

Yes, it is switched to come on and go off with the ignition.

As Cookie said, it also stays live for a while after the ignition is switched off, as do the other auxiliary sockets.

If though you turn off the ignition (socket stays live for a while) and then turn the ignition on again, starting the engine, the socket will 'die' briefly. This is simply because the bike channels all the available power to cranking the engine. In reality it is not a problem but some peripherals (like my old GPS) need to be re-booted following the brief power interruption.

In theory you could use the 'spare' socket to power devices other than a GPS. However, I have not heard of this done and have no idea what amperage it will support.

The two 'regular' auxiliary sockets each cut out at 5 amps. It is hard to imagine the 'spare' socket is rated any higher, indeed - given its apparent purpose to simply power GPS devices - it may well be lower.

What GPS is it Richard?

Garmins with a battery (Quest, Rino and many others) have an option that you can set so that it doesn't turn off on power loss....just wondering if you hadn't found the setting :nenau

Hi Bill,

T'was a BuMW Nav III (same as a Gamin of some description or other but with extra buttons). It had no internal battery....I was going to add that my new Zumo has a battery so it's not a problem.....

I am the proud owner of Wapping's Nav III (indeed he fitted it to my GS after many hours of swearing and burning of fingers due the the previous owner's muppetry). The Nav III does switch off with the ignition but when turned back on remains on the required route - no re-booting required after say, filling with fuel.
 
Wapping - thanks for the comprehensive reply. Thinking about fitting an Inforad M1 Speed Camera Locator and was wondering where to power it from - now have the answer!
